To celebrate the release of Torn, which is the sequel to the well-loved New Adult romance, Connected, I’ve done an interview with author Kim Karr here. Connected left us desperate to know more with a shocking but exciting reveal at the end that put a huge twist on the story and today readers can finally find out how that impacted these characters’ lives!
I have the series order linked up below here as well as the interview with Kim where she talks about her writing process, how music impacts her writing, who she’d cast her characters as and what we can expect from the rest of the Connections series 🙂
Also, check below for a signed galley copy (pre-publication bound manuscript) of Torn!!

Question — Your stories are all so interconnected with little hints laid out very early that come into play in later parts of the book. What is your writing process? Do you plan your books out in advance or does it all come to you as you go?
- In April 2011 when this book series came to me, I knew there were certain elements I wanted the reader to discover as they experienced the series. I do plan each book out and try to even plan the next so I know ahead of time what I need as my foundation. In Torn I start to lay the groundwork for Flawed and further cement it in Mended AND in Mended I have a small seemingly insignificant part that will play a huge part in the final book 🙂
Question — Music is a huge part of both your books. Do you listen to a lot of music? Do you find it helps you write?
- Hans Christian Anderson once said, “Where words fail, music speaks.” As a listener, this statement is less impactful because I listen to music all the time—loss of words or not. I listen because I love figuring out the story of a song—I have always done this. I listen to songs and play their movie in my head. But as a writer, I couldn’t agree more because I do turn to music for inspiration. I also watch music videos for inspiration. I listen to music when I’m writing scene I’ve already played out in my head—if I’m trying to express written emotions, the tone of a certain song allows me to feel the sentiments that my characters may be feeling. But if I haven’t pre-scripted the scene I prefer silence and I let the scene play out in my head like a movie. I chose to have each chapter be titled by a song in my books that best represented the events occurring within. My goal was that the reader would listen to the song before reading each chapter and they then they would feel the full impact of that scene. Listening to the lyrics of a song and truly understanding them tells such a beautiful story. So, combining this with an emotional novel just helps bring it to life.
Question — If you could cast your books, who would you choose to play River, Ben and Dahlia?
- Oh that is easy! I’ve envisioned these characters since I created them. Dahlia’s muse is Blake Lively, River’s muse is Chace Crawford, and Ben’s muse is Alex Pettyfer.
Question — What is your plan for the rest of the series?
- It seems to evolve as I finish each book but has always involved six books:
- Connected
- Torn
- Mended – I just finished Book 3 and it’s Xander’s story.
- Frayed – This book will be next and it centers around one of Torn’s characters and his journey to finding himself.
- Flawed – This book will focus on Aerie, Dahlia’s best friend.
- Perfected – I cannot give details to this book right now but it bring all the characters together and be the end of the series.
