“Where have you been all of my life?”
“Waiting,” he said softly.
I absolutely loved this book! It was sweet, sexy, heart-warming, and incredibly romantic!! I read it in one non-stop sitting because I just didn’t want to put it down. It’s a contemporary fairy tale with a moody, brooding, deeply protective modern-day bad-boy knight who falls utterly in love with a down-on-her-luck damsel in distress who he rescues. This was exactly the kind of addictive book I was looking for and I highly recommend it as a new favorite!!
A dark knight. An avenging angel. A superhero. A righteous vigilante. Someone who fought for those who couldn’t fight for themselves, who protected those who were vulnerable…
The story is loosely inspired by the legend of Camelot, but you’ll quickly realize that it is a completely modern romance. Colton Lane, our grouchy-but-lovable hero, worked each day playing a knight at the local dinner theater (or, castle). Trained in stage combat and riding, he used the intense physicality of his job as an outlet for the pain and anger he kept buried deep inside. Even though he was about as far from a knight in shining armor as possible, everything in his life changed when he met Verity Gwynn and her special-needs brother at the ultimate low point in their lives and came to their unlikely rescue by helping them find jobs at the theater and giving them a place to stay. And, as their lives entwined, Colt and Verity began to fall deeply in love with each other…
He was so strange, this unlikely knight who had grudgingly taken them under his wing, helping them get jobs and giving them a place to stay. She hadn’t known him longer than a handful of hours, and he groused and huffed and scowled near constantly. Yet, in his own way, he had saved them many times today, and Verity couldn’t help the warmth she felt toward him.
This was a really quick read — it’s a full length novel, but I still found myself flying easily through the pages without wanting to stop. I read it cover to cover in one sitting and loved getting lost in their story.
I loved Colton’s protective side. He had an explosive temper when anyone he loved was being threatened and that was something he worked on over the course of the book, but I have to admit that there’s just something about a big grouchy Alpha who is willing to drop everything to stand up for, protect, and rescue anyone who needs it that is truly heart-melting. To be honest, his dark, brooding nature even added to the appeal because this side of him was unexpected. You’d almost think he’d be the kind of guy to walk away from those situations, when in reality, he’d be the first one there to help those who needed it.
He chucked softly. “What do you want?”
“To feel safe again,” she said instead.
“Do you feel safe here?”
She nodded. “I do.”
“Then let’s consider that wish granted because nothing scary’s getting through me.”
Verity was an incredibly kind-hearted and sweet woman who made the best of every situation she was in. And even though she didn’t realize it at first, she and Colt had a very important aspect of their lives in common. She was the legal guardian of her beloved special-needs older brother and he was also the guardian of his younger cousin — a sweet girl with cerebral palsy. I loved the way they both cared so kindly and deeply for their family, never hesitated to protect them, and did everything in their power to give them the most wonderful lives they could.
“I’m no saint, Verity,” he said from behind her. “If you’re trying to put me on a pedastal or fit me with a halo, you’re out of luck, baby. I’m just a man with a million flaws, like all the rest of ‘em. I’ve got a temper, and it’s bad sometimes, and when someone I care about is threatened, yes ma’am, I hit back. Yes, I do.” He paused, and his voice, which had gotten worked up as he spoke, was gentler when he continued. “You should know that I’ve never hit a woman. I’ve never hit someone weaker than me and certainly never roughed up someone for sport. I’ve already promised I won’t ever hurt you or yours. But I can’t stand here and lie to you and tell you that if someone is bothering Mel or you or your brother, that I’ll just stand aside and let it happen. Because I won’t. It’s not who I am. It’s just not in my make and model.”
Living together and being around each other every day at work intensified Colt and Verity’s attraction towards each other and as things began to heat up between them, this story took quite a sexy turn! I loved seeing them fall in love and even when their lives got complicated, I loved that they always worked through whatever came their way. The ending was sweet and beautiful and we were even treated to a gorgeous epilogue with all the feels!
While there was no doubt that this story was completely modern, there were elements in the writing that definitely felt like a fairy tale, which I thought were a really great touch and reminded you that you were reading a book inspired by a much older story. Also, the story is told in third person but you still do get both Colt and Verity’s perspectives. And finally, this is a standalone novel (the story itself is not connected to any other book by this author) and you should just know that the book ends at 92% — it’s all extra stuff after that.
I wanted to read this book from the moment I heard about it and I’m so glad I did because it has turned out to be a favorite! The story was loaded with heart-felt emotions, passionate romance, and beautiful family connections. There’s no cheating, no triangles, a little bit of angst, and a whole lot of swoon and heart-warming feels. It was a tad predictable and while I didn’t find myself surprised by it, I was still completely addicted and once I started reading, I didn’t want to put it down. If you’re looking for a swoony love story to sweep you away, definitely try this!
“Is it too soon? For us to be in love?”
“It happens all the time in fairy tales,” he said, smiling at her…
Rating: 4.5 stars! Standalone romance.

I one-clicked! Thank you SO much for the heads up that this book ends at 92%… I hate getting caught off guard when Kindle e-books suddenly end earlier than I expect, so I appreciate the advance warning.
