FIFTYAs an #OfficialFifty blog, I was honored by an invitation to the Fifty Shades First event on the TODAY show in NYC to see a screening of this highly-anticipated movie early on February 6th! Since so many of you are curious about it, here are some of the biggest things that stood out to me…

IMG_4908bFirst, I was most impressed with how closely the movie captured the exact FEELING from the book. The mood was a perfect match!! The movie was true to the story in the book (several lines are almost exact and all the important scenes are there). The sex scenes were HOT. Like WOAH. They really do not hold back! The Red Room is stunning. Most importantly though, the love story at the center of it was so strong and you could really see the progression that Christian and Ana went through both individually and together — the conflict, the passion, the intensity, it was all there! Plus, there’s actually a lot of humor in it! I’m also a huuuge fan of movie music and the score was just beautiful and powerfully complimented each scene. Some of you were worried about Dakota but trust me when I say that SHE. WAS. INCREDIBLE. Truly. She WAS Anastasia. Ana is supposed to be the heart of this story because at the end of the day, even though this is a romance, this is her story that she tells us and honestly, Dakota just WAS Ana. You could tell that the audience felt everything she felt. And Jamie really embodied Christian’s inner conflict. As a huge fan of the book, I couldn’t be happier with this movie!!!!

This movie is just the first book and, like I said, it’s very true to that story. 3 books, 3 movies.

Oh also, on a random note: it was really cool to feel the audience’s reaction to everything that happened in the movie. This is the first time I’ve quite literally HEARD an entire room of people collectively swoon. Swooning has a sound!! And it happened several times!FSF1

The whole Fifty Shades First experience was really just amazing and surreal. Everyone got to the theater early in the morning and were treated to all kinds of drinks and refreshments, made our way down the “grey carpet” with red roses and movie posters lining the sides, found our reserved seats in the beautiful Zeigfeld Theatre, got to see the main cast (Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson) and filmmakers (author EL James and director Sam Taylor-Johnson) answer questions live on the Today Show in the theater, watched the movie, then saw another interview filmed. And we were also given the coolest swag — authentic movie replica Red Room keys and never-seen-before movie posters — to take home. Whoever planned this event truly did a fantastic job!

REDROOMAll in all, this was an experience that I will always remember and I’m just so incredibly thrilled to see what an amazing job the Fifty Shades movie team did creating it. This is a story that is dear to millions of readers and I really felt like the people who made the movie “got” the story. They really got it.

Fifty Shades of Grey opens in theaters February 13, 2015.

  45. I am hoping this movie is good I am very apprehensive about seeing books that have been turned into movie and I was scared this one wouldn’t be good because of the “R” rating! Your review of the movie has in fact helped to put me at ease and I donhope it is as good as you say it is!   97. I read the whole series 3 times. I’m counting down the days to see the movie. The book not only stimulated me mentally and physically but also they helped to stimulate my marriage as well. I would recommend it for both sexes and give it 5+ stars.

  119. I’ve read the trilogy seven times, and have loaned the books out to countless people, we just can’t get enough of this hot love story. When I first found out they were creating a movie about 50 Shades, I honestly didn’t think I could go see it, the books were just that good, but after seeing all of the trailers and the chemistry between the two actors, there’s no way I cannot go and see it now. I needed a cold shower after watching all of the trailers on the link you provided. Dayam those were hot! The anticipation is killing me! I’m already on the list to preorder the movie on Amazon, no way Im missing out on that one!

  125. I read this series a while ago, Fifty Shades was actually the book that brought me back to my reading habit that’s been ‘sleeping’ through university years. I fell in love instantly with this couple and when I first found out about the casts, I couldnt agree more… Jamie is definitely Mr. Grey and Dakota is definitely Ana!

I love all of them but the first book is where the chemistry is at it’s most complex point. So much happens to both Anna and Christian internally. The foundation is built in this first book.

  139. I loved the 50 Shades series. I was late to the bandwagon and it was actually my husband who brought me the first book to read because a girl who works with him told him to. I started the first book and couldn’t put it down. I read the next two I the following three days. It was like an obsession. I’ve since paid it forward by buying the set for two of my friends. Ana and Christian’s story will go down in history.

I loved all 3 books, I didn’t start to read romance fiction until I quit smoking back in 2012 and a friend of mine gave me the trilogy, she thought it would help since reading would keep my mind busy plus my hands full with the paperbacks. I loved it, I could not get enough of this series, I actually reread the whole series a day after I initially finished it the first time. The love I had for this series led me to start reading more and now I read all of the time but Fifty Shades holds that special spot in my heart.

Before, I mostly read Paulo Coelho’s books and that’s very different from FSOG but I loved it and I cannot seem to stop reading now. FSOG was the book that brought serious reading into my life (and a Kindle) and a day doesn’t go by without me picking it up and often not putting it down till the early hours!   219. I did read the book and loved it. =D I enjoyed your thoughts on this movie. I have not been a fan of Dakota’s as you have mentioned. I had seen her in other movies and she was boring to me in them and unmemorable. I also did not feel the chemistry in the trailers so I have not been excited to see the movie. To be fair tho, they are such short trailers and I was trying to keep my mind open. I am happy to hear that you enjoyed the movie and found Dakota to be believable as Ana. My husband will not see the movie with me so I am not sure when I will see the movie.

  243. I was at the screening.. the movie is AMAZING and SOOO HOTT!! I agree with everything you said above. Dakota, Jamie and the rest of the cast were remarkable, as was the music. There were great bits of comedy as well to cut through all the sexual tension. The contract negotiation scene was one of my favorites (aside from the all the steamy love scenes). I loved the movie so much my friend and I came back for the second screening, as did hundreds of others!

I enjoyed it from start to finish, and while the sex was a bonus lol, I thought the most enjoyable aspects were the complexity of Christian’s character and the romance that blossoms between him and Ana.     when I read the fanfic I was 17 so I didn’t add the story to my favs or the author I thought that ff would banned me it makes me laugh now.

I was actually a few rows in front of you Row P seat 112,.. my cousin is actually in your pic where you have the contract & ticket,.. she’s the one sitting with the phone in her hand(It was my phone too lol,.. so my phone got in your pic lol). And I so agree with you about Dakota, she sooooo was Ana!! I loved the movie & I cant wait to see it again!! <3

    I’m so excited for the movie but too bad the movie won’t be showing in Indonesia 🙁

  325. Honestly, I did not able to read the book but heard great reviews regarding it. I planned to borrow one WHICH is not happened since I saw on twitter, FB and even other sites that there will be a movie regarding this. Instead of reading it, why not watch it? (Of course with my partner *giggles*). I am looking forward to watch the movie (hopefully, they will release it here in Philippines) since I badly want to experience first hand of what you feel/think regarding the movie. Such a great review! Helps me a lot! 🙂

  335. Fifty shades is a beautiful book! I’m so excited to see the film that my inner goddess is also kicking me! The fifty trilogy actually got me back into reading, and for that, I’m thankful 🙂

  344. I loved the books. I thought it was great how E.L. James was one of the first authors to go out of the comfort zone most people are in and write about something that could have been a hit or miss with readers. Can’t wait to see the movie!!

  351. I saw the movie yesterday and I agree with what you said. I loved this book so much and I’m so happy with the cast, I knew Dakota would slay it , but my attention was on Jamie, I loved him OMG.

  358. I went to see the movie last night. If I had not read the books I wouldv enjoyed the movie so much more. Unfortunately, I didn’t love it as much as I had hoped, I do agree Dakota does deliver Ana. Jamie, not so much as Christian. I did not feel this amazing chemistry between the actors. Of course I understand not all scenes of book would’ve made it into the movie, but I felt certain scenes that would have been the beginning of the love were left out.I still hold on to the believe Henry Cavill would’ve been a Much better choice for Christian,(don’t get me wrong, Jamie is gorgeous), just Not Christian Grey.

  359. I loved the movie too. It differs a bit from the book – kind of lite version. But the actors are great and deliver unforgettable romantic experience. Can’t wait to see the sequel! Hope it will make as much money as the original film. Producers can go further and even make a tv-series. How do you like trhis idea?

  360. I barely got around to seeing this movie, and I’m so glad I wasn’t the only one who was impressed. I wrote a review on my blog because I liked it so much better than I thought I would. I couldn’t believe all the negative hype about it after finally giving in and seeing it. I wish I could have watched it much sooner.

    The only thing I disagree with was the music. Some of the music was lovely, but there were certain scenes where I felt the music didn’t match what was going on. Maybe it’s just me, lol.

    Anyway, I am envious that you got to do this!
