“Don’t forget me,” I whispered.
HOLY FREAKING SQUEEEEE!!
I loved everything about this book! It was a delightful, heart-warming romance with just enough angst to keep my heart racing. This is the kind of story that once you start reading it, you won’t want to put it down until you reach the end! It’s unique, beautiful, and full of happy feels – I can’t recommend it highly enough!
If you’ve been following my reviews for a while, you know I’m a huge fan of Devney Perry’s books. I fell in love with her writing with her debut novel and I’m loved every single book she’s released since then (full list here). Something about the combination of her compelling writing style, the absorbing stories she tells, and the depth of the emotions she conveys really speaks to me and makes me fall in love with her characters over and over again.
Runaway Road is the first in a new series of standalones – each story will be focused on a different couple, but with interconnected characters throughout. The heroine grew up living on the run and bonded with some other teens her age. They since parted ways as life took them in different directions, but these are their stories.
She left the junkyard that she’d called home during her teen years and married into money, creating a life for herself that she thought would make her happy. But it was empty and devoid of connection and when she couldn’t take it anymore, she got divorced and took to the road to find herself again and regain control of her life.
Unfortunately her chariot of freedom got into an accident in a small town in the middle of nowhere and her knight in shining tow truck was none other than the hero of this story – Brooks Cohen.
With only a few days together while she was in town getting her car fixed, neither of them expected to start anything serious. They were complete opposites – she was blowing in the breeze, while he had deep roots and connections – especially as a single dad. But regardless of their circumstance, they couldn’t stay away from each other and it forced them both to reconsider what they each really wanted from their lives, and where the true root of their happiness lay.
“A week. I had a week with this woman, maybe nine or ten days, to soak her in. Then I’d let her go, already knowing that watching her drive away was going to hurt…”
I absolutely loved how functional they both were. It was refreshing to read about two completely level-headed, if wildly different, people falling in love. There was a maturity to this story I really appreciated. I got caught up with these characters, I cared about their lives, and I found myself flipping the pages of this book so fast.
“Why do we always talk about me?” I asked.
“Because I want to learn it all, and I’m running out of time.”
This was actually a shorter book than normal but it was the perfect length for this story and it worked out because I had a shorter amount of time to read today so it allowed me to read it in one sitting without having to put it down.
In contrast to the romance, there was also just a little touch of mystery to the story which I loved and kept me guessing, but the heart of this story was definitely the sweet, sexy, completely swoon-worthy romance.
“If you stay, we’re going to make a real thing out of this. Mark my words.”
“How do you know?”
I took her hand and placed it over my heart, then I covered it with my own. “I feel it. Deep.”
I LOVED this book and am eagerly awaiting the next story in this series! I’m already super intrigued by all the possible story options within this new series and can’t wait to read them all!
If you’re looking for a GORGEOUS new story to fall in love with, this is it!
Rating: 5 STARS! Contemporary Adult Romance, can standalone.
Note: this book got a new cover after I wrote my review. I left the original cover in my graphics, but included the new cover down below. Both books are the same.
