I just wanted to take a few minutes to try and convince everyone to read this series because they are my absolute top favorite books in the world!!!
This is, without a doubt, the most well-written, most intense, most incredibly beautiful, and heart wrenching yet heart warming EPIC love story ever told. I truly mean that. It. is. breathtaking!!!
The depth of Alexander and Tatiana’s love for each other is unforgettable.
On the scale of 1 – 5 stars that I rate all books on, this easily gets 10 stars!
Out of all the books I’ve ever read, no story has ever affected me as deeply as this one. I remember my first time reading the trilogy, I read all 3 books back to back and I can’t honestly remember ever going through as strongly EMOTIONAL a reading experience. To say this love story stole my heart is an understatement. It OWNED me. I can’t even count the number of times I cried not because it was sad, but just because I was FEELING so much for these characters. The writing was SO exquisite and Alexander & Tania’s longing and love for each other was SO powerful that I truly FELT every single thing that they went through. The books were long but I could barely put them down. It took me a few days to read them all and my life was pretty much put on hold. I was emotionally exhausted and yet every moment I wasn’t reading, I was thinking about the books. This story consumed me. And it left a lasting impression on my heart and soul that I know will never be topped. I don’t even try to compare other books to these even though I love so many books and I have so many top favorites. This story is just different for me. Special in a way I’ve never felt before. It’s left a mark on me I know I’ll never forget. Everytime I go back and re-read quotes now, I’m literally crying (tears pouring down my face) within moments. Every single one of the intense, overpowering emotions I felt while I was reading it comes flooding back instantly. The depth and all-consuming, heart-wrenching INTENSITY of the way Alexander LOVED Tania, and the way she LOVED him back is just beyond powerful. Beyond beautiful. This is, in the most literal sense of the word, the MOST EPIC LOVE STORY EVER told. If you’ve read it, you probably know exactly what I mean. And if you haven’t read it yet, please please please trust me and grab yourself a copy. It’s worth every single cent and more at full price. For me, this love story was the definition of “unforgettable”.
A few things….
This is a completed trilogy that tells the lifelong romance of one couple.
Note: Goodreads has them listed incorrectly. It lists a prequel called “Children of Liberty” but that book should not be read first. It was written after the trilogy and is the story of Alexander’s parents (PS: it’s not HEA) and there is no info in it that you need to know before reading this trilogy.
To try and soothe your worries…. Yes, The Bronze Horseman is an intense, heart-wrenching story but I’d like to clarify that it is not devastating. Read it with a stockpile of tissues for sure but I promise that the trilogy has a gorgeous ending that will leave you a wonderful feeling!
A lot of readers ask me how “historical” these books are. The answer is: they’re really not!! I mean yes, the story takes place during WW2 but it does not “feel” like a historical book. The characters speak in modern language and there’s no lengthly detail on historical events. This is primarily a love story — the focus is on the characters, not the events… so the only events that are shown are the ones that directly affect Alexander & Tania’s lives.
I mentioned epic already, right??
A lot of readers ask me how steamy the books are. They are Adult level romance steam for sure — but the story has to build to the heat. But like half way through the first book there’s a 75ish page section that is WOW (hehe, I don’t want to give away specifics though but just trust me, you’ll get ALL the steam) and they’re married for most of the series so there’s definitely the kind of heat that would be expected of a married couple who are deeply in love with each other.
Next commonly asked question is whether there’s a HEA. It’s Romance so YES. This is a happy ending story. The first 2 books have to be read together (first book has an ending that isn’t exactly a cliffhanger but you’ll NEED the next book right away). Second book has a very resolved and happy ending — in a way it concludes the first book’s story and ends that chapter of their lives. Third book ends with them in their 80s literally having spent their whole lives together. So they have a HEA. But unlike most books, you kind of SEE their HEA happen because the series follows their whole lives together.
What are other readers saying?? ➜ “OMG! OMG! OMG!!! Oh and OMG!!!! I do NOT think I will EVER be the same after that read. Immediately went into book 2… much to my husbands displeasure. I think it was the tears. HA! His words… “You take your reads TOO seriously.” And I’m like, “How can I NOT, by now, these two are my friends and I have bled with them!!!” Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for recommending this read. Honestly will not be the same after this story. Every person with half a brain and the ability to read should be required to read this book. It’s a life changer.”
If you have any questions at all, just leave a comment below and I’ll get back to you 😀
*** MOVIE NEWS *** THE BRONZE HORSEMAN MOVIE was announced on October 5, 2015. “Ask yourself these three questions, Tatiana Metanova, and you will know who you are. Ask: what do you believe in? What do you hope for? But most important – ask: what do you love?…
I know who I am, she thought, taking his hand… I am Tatiana. And I believe in, and hope for, and love Alexander for life.”

I’m convinced! I’ve seen several people talking about the first in the series, but no one with the passion or ferver you just spoke. I was afraid I wouldn’t like them because of the historical setting (not of fan of historical romance, either), but I’m one-clicking now!
Aestas says
SQUEEEEEEEEEEE <3

You are going to do this to me again, aren’t you!!LOL *I’m dragging my feet over to Amazon now!* All because YOU said so; and as you know, I follow your opinion like a religion!!!LOL SO…I shall trust you that if you say these are EPIC books, then they must be!!! Oh…and do expect me to Private message you if I have questions!!!
All joking aside, you know that I love your blog and the books that you suggest; so thank you for helping me find good books to read!
Aestas says
Hahhahahaaaa YAY!!!! Trust me you won’t regret it!! These books changed my book life. Seriously, the whole week I read these, I was just a wreck (in a good way). I carried them around with me from room to room, my eyes were bloodshot from no sleep/tears, and even now, months after I’ve read them, all it takes is reading a few quotes (which I’ve practically memorized) to bring me almost to tears. Not sad tears, just super super emotional tears. I really can’t find the words to do justice to them so the best I can do is try to pimp them out to everyone I can lol.
I really meant it, Im more than happy to answer anything or provide reassurance along the way so message me anytime 😀

Can’t wait to try this series! FYI Nook users: the first book is also on there for $1.99 (slightly different version than the link in the blog post – it has an excerpt of Children of Liberty).

Okay so I am convinced that I will have to give this series a try, especially since you said no books could compare! You have my attention and the books have been added to my To Read list! (my list is getting a bit out of control at the moment, so many good books out or to be released). Thanks for sharing your series favorite!
Zainab says
~ My god, those books were literally AMAZING.! All I know is Tatiana and Alexander are a match made in heaven. So inspiring and intense. I flipped through these books like they were nothing. Page by page, I sat, walked, BREATHED The Queen of Lake Ilmen and Shura. Absolutely compelling and heart-stoppingly sad yet beautiful. Your blog is the first Ive ever read, and now I cant stop reading it, checking every day if there’s a new book that has been added to your list. Thank you for introducing me to THE most amazing Trilogy ever written.
Nina says
I am almost done with Summer Garden. I’ve been face down reading this series. I’ve had lots of 2-3 hours of sleepless nights. I’ve tried really hard to not read too many reviews until I’m done but it’s so hard to keep it all to myself. There are so many emotions that you go through reading these books. I sometimes can’t breathe. I’ve sobbed a lot for the ups and downs. I’m absolutely engrossed in the lives of Tatiana and Alexander. I will need other readers of these series therapy when I get done in the next day or so….
jamie says
I am so glad that someone else loves this trilogy as much as I do!! I have read them all several times!! I might even name my next baby Alexander 🙂 Love all of your recommendations…thank you!
Aestas says
I want to re-read them so badly! They are just SUCH beautiful books <3
Jessica says
I am so glad I took your recommendation and read these books!!! I think I have fallen as deeply in love with Tatiana and Alexander as you have! I couldn’t put them down and literally weeped at certain points during the books. I used to think that Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth were my favorite historical couple but they’ve been moved to second place now!!! Such beautiful books and I recommend them to everyone!!! Thank you for guiding me to these books!!!
Ams says
I agree! Definitely, the best trilogy I’ve read so far. I can no longer even count the number of time I’ve reread these books. Thanks for sharing. 🙂
Loreena says
I am right there with you that this is the greatest love story I’ve ever read! I was gifted The Bronze Horseman when I was leaving a workplace aged 20, now 13 years later and I am still as in love with Tatiana and Alexander as I was the first moment I got swept away by their story. I have loaned my book to many friends and each of them has fallen in love with the story, and Paullina’s writing also. I’m just about to read all three again and I am sure there will be tears streaming once again!

My grandmother gave me the first book when I was 16 years old – 12 years later I have read the series over 20 times. It’s hard to read these comments – because I can’t believe anyone could love these books like I do – I’m a bit possesive over them lol. My gran never got to read the final book before she passed away… But I’m sure wherever she is, she’s hanging out out with tatiana and alexandra (’cause you know, they were real – I’m convinced of it 🙂 )
Erika says
Wow 20 times!! I finally read these this past summer and I’m completely IN LOVE!! I just can’t get into any book now because my life revolves around Alexander and Tatiana. I will be re-reading these soon I know. And I too am convinced that they were real, how can they not be I felt everything in those books.

Okay, this has just convinced me that I NEED to read this series ASAP. I have seen so many people say they love it but put it off because of the whole historical thing. You have eased my worries! Off to buy it now! Woohoo!

I’ve read 1,000’s of books and this series is by far my favorite. In fact after reading The Bronze Horseman I looked up pictures to get an idea of what the areas looked like. Couldn’t stop thinking of the story. Decided I wanted to learn more about Leningrad that I had to read “Six Days in Leningrad” before I went further on to Tatiana & Alexander. So excited about the movie.

Thank you!

You have convinced me! I just purchased the entire trilogy and can not wait to start reading!

I’ve been ignoring these books for so many times. Because at first, i thought it wasn’t my kind of book. BUT!! You finally convince me to read them, and I’m sooooooo in loveeee. I’ve been crying, weeping, sobbing like a mad women. This totally worth it.
lisa says
Could someone please please tell me where The Bridge to Holy Cross figures in this, is it book 4? I’m so very confused.
Aestas says
It’s the same as book #2. It was just the original title of the second book. It’s exactly the same content plus (I believe) one extra scene. But I’m pretty sure it’s out of print now in most places. The trilogy is only the three books I posted above (no fourth book) 🙂
julie says
Hello,
so after hesitating for about 2 years I gave in and bought the book. I am currently half way and a nerve wreck!!! I know everything points toward a HEA in your review but OMG I wonder if too much is not going to happen before that HEA comes. And therefore, the HEA would not as satisfying as needs be. Sometimes it is hard not to doubt Alexander…. I feel so conflicted, I love him and understands where he comes from but somehow I feel like he has to noble role…. Poor Tania… I love her, I want to give her a huuuge hug!!! I am so sorry if this is not something I was suppose to post, but I so need to vent and feel reassured!! But I am on the verge of a mental breakdown, I need to keep on reading!!! I am so glad I waited to be on vacation to read this!! No other way would have been possible. It is so good, THANK YOU FOR YOUR REVIEWS. I think it is an unforgettable story!!! And I usually HATE that part of history (thus my two years hesitation to start this). OMG do you have a chat or something where content can be discussed!!! I need to vent and share my impression to be reassured that we all went through struggles… LOL, I sound like a mental case but I think everyone will understand me here!! 😉
Aestas says
Hey! Sorry I’m on my phone and cant write a detailed message but you should know that I personally find this to also be my most favorite HEA of all (for the series). The character development over the series is just phenomenal. I think you’ll love it! 🙂
Cathy says
Hate to sound ignorant, but what is HEA?
Aestas says
Happily Ever After 🙂 (and not ignorant! Everyone learns the term at some point. I asked too once upon a time)
honey says
Oooh I haven’t read this yet! Thanks for the rec.
Iara Silva says
I didn’t know about these books before, but i going to read them soon. The covers are beautiful 🙂
Thank you for the recommendation ^_^

This trilogy was so awesome!! I loved it!
Tsagiv says
Thanks for this review! It makes me feel almost normal, now that I’m trying to get back to real life post this trilogy. You expressed my exact feelings, which is incredible. I read these 3 books in one week, which is a personal record (even before husband & 3 kids!) – I was completely on my own cloud while reading these. I finished 3 days ago and can simply not think of anything else… Everything ties to it one way or another. Insane. In a way, this book ruined every other book in the world for me. AMAZING. And it’s so good to know that it had such an imapct on others and that I’m not alone on this 🙂
I don’t recall EVER feeling the need to search for info, just any info, about books I’ve read. But with this one, I just can’t get enough.
Thank you!!
P.S- any clue on movie news update?? There’s nothing I can find other than The announcement you included….
Aestas says
I’m so glad you loved them! They’re just incomparable to any other books in my eyes.
And as for the movie, they’re in the script writing stage I believe still. I’ll be posting news on my FB page as it’s announced but nothing major yet has been said. I’m excited though!
Gina says
This series is also one of my all time favorites. I’m so excited for news. Thank you for keeping us updated! Love your blog.
Aestas says
You’re so welcome!! I’m so glad you love it too!!
Rita says
This book was recommended to my book club and I couldn’t believe how quickly I got through the Bronze Horseman. I ran out and got the second book the next day and really loved the Tatiana and Alexander book as well. I just couldn’t get enough. I just finished reading the third book and am so sad that it’s over, but it did really have a happy ending, which I loved. I feel like there is such a void now — I want to go back and reread them all! I miss not having Tatiana and Alexander next to my nightstand at night. Ihpe this movie comes out soon. I can’t wait!
pamilerin says
I don’t think I will love any book as much as I love this book the bronze horsemen as really given me something to hold on to….. so much emotion……so much tears……so much pain….so much love but still it’s happy ever after its d best book and the only book to get a ten from me…..Alexander and Tatiana….. Orbelli am impressed by this epic….
Marisela says
Omg I love these books. I just recently randomly picked up The Summer Garden and then had to read the other two. Omg I’m so excited a movie is going to be made. As I was reading the books, I was thinking that this great story should be brought to the big screen. Can’t wait!
sky says
I have read those book after seeing your recommendation. Just saw this post.and I have read all 3books. I don’t know what to say except they are beautifully haunting novels and of course page turner.
Kelly says
Hi,
I loved this series too!
Have you heard of a book called Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers? To me this book is as special as TBH and it has the most amazing HEA I have ever read, short but finishes the novel perfectly!
Plus it’s got high ratings on Amazon. <3
Aestas says
I haven’t yet, but thanks for suggesting it!! 🙂
Helena Sauceda Olivera says
I also like Paulina`s book)
Courtney Nelson says
This is also my all time favorite series! I’ve read all three books 3 times now and will be reading them again. Every time I read them, I just can’t put them down.
Melina says
This is also my fave book of all time beside bet me from Jennifer Crusie. My sister and I love tatiana and alexander, and on the light side min and cal……
Erika says
Thank you so much for making this your all time #1 otherwise I may not have picked it up. I typically don’t read historical romance, so I drug my feet for quite some time before picking this series up, but I am so glad I did. It has been a long time since I did not want to get to the end of a book and have the characters exit my life. Now I am not really excited about starting anything new.
Elizabeth says
Literally cannot even function after finally finishing this trilogy this morning. Thank you so much for this recommendation, even though I have no idea what I could possibly read next now. This series ruined me. But it was so worth it. Ahhhhh.
Just, thank you.
Aestas says
I know exactly how you feel ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤
Mary Beth says
But whete do I go now? I have read these books over and over again and have fallen in love. Now I feel lost. Any recommendations on what great book to read next?
Malinda says
Just read these books when I saw your post on them being on sale a few weeks ago…wow. These books were just so much. Thank you for the recommendation. I just don’t know where read from here!
Aestas says
You’re so welcome!! Really glad you loved them! To be honest, it took me a good week after I read them to be able to read anything else. HUGE book hangover!
Zina says
Hi! While reading your review I felt like reading my own thoughts… 🙂 Yes, for me also this novel (series) is like no other…and I was reading it incredibly emotionally connected to the characters and their story – literally, I myself was in such mental mess during their struggles…
..and I definitely understand when you say “A HUGE book hangover!” :))
It is a problem for me, too, to continue reading something new after these books and therefore I would appreciate some suggestions how to literary survive this emotional wreck& ecstasy…
In previous comments I saw that girls have already asked for next suggestions and I myself do have one:
Flowers from the Storm by Laura Kinsale (don’t judge a book by its title, pls – just read it!)
Zina says
Please, can you explain what is “a bonus material” in the editions called: The Bronze Horseman with Bonus Material?
I would like to know how do e-book and printed book TBH differ? I have noticed some things which are mentioned in e-book and audio version but weren’t in printed edition… 🙁 I don’t like this fact because I’m now reading a printed book but I don’t want to miss anything…
Aestas says
That is not an edition that is available in most places. In fact I believe it’s only available in Australia and according to my understanding there is no significant or important bonus material. You’re not missing anything. I think it’s like a bonus chapter or anything. My personal opinion though of all ‘extended editions’ is that they are never as good as the original. When a book or even a movie is edited down for release, the scenes that are included or cut are chosen for very specific reasons — they make the flow of the story perfect. So anything extra or bonus usually just disrupts that flow. If you’re reading the normal printed edition (or eBook), you will get the best version of the story available 🙂
Zina says
Thank you, Aestas 🙂 You’ve calmed me down 🙂
As for the selection of the book I shall read after TBH, I chose Vanguard (by CJ Markusfeld) due to your recommendations…
If you’ll read the book I myself have mentioned, Flowers from the Storm (by Laura Kinsale), I’m VERY interested about your impressions regarding this book (but firstly you must ignore its weird title and cover 😀 😀 )
But, of course, TBH is and stays on the throne without competition 🙂
Aestas says
Welcome!
Vanguard is a wonderful amazing book that definitely carried some similar wartime romance feelings. I just suggest that you don’t try to compare it directly to TBH just because in all honesty, you will always be disappointed. Like you said, TBH goes on a throne. This is the reason why I rate TBH with 10 stars with is so completely above my normal rating scale of 5 stars that I never have to compare it to anything else and I can appreciate each other book I read on it’s own merit 🙂
And thank for the recommendation! And HAPPY READING!
Frances says
Every word you wrote to describe these books was like you have taken them from my head!! I cannot express what these books and this story means to me! I just finished Lone Star this morning and OMG!!!! Have you read it?
Aestas says
Awww thank you! I haven’t read LS. I prefer to leave this trilogy as it’s own separate story.
Stefanie Magura says
From the description, it seems like Lone Star is a completely different story.
Stefanie Magura says
I haven’t read this yet, but it has been moved up further on my list now that I can read it in Audio finally. I heard about this series because so many readers of Outlander loved it. I’d be interested to see what your thoughts are on that by the way. I’m also reading a series called the Tea Rose Trilogy by Jennifer Donnelly which I think you should check out. I got it as another recommendation from Outlander reading groups. It’s historical and each book covers the love story of one of three siblings in a family, but the siblings figure in each other’s story so it is a family saga in a way. I’m about to start the third book now on the youngest brother and his lady love.
Aestas says
I’ve known about the Tea Rose Trilogy for a few years now but it was my understanding (and I could be wrong) that they’re not necessarily fully romance focused and they’re not always happy endings? Am I right? I’m a pretty hardcore romance reader. I need no cheating, no triangles, a focus on the love story, and happy endings to enjoy the story. Given that, do you still think I’d still like the Tea Rose Trilogy?
Stefanie Magura says
Whether the romance is enough might be something you have to judge. I did like the historical and more suspenseful parts to the story, so maybe not then. As for happy endings, the first two had each couple together in the end so I don’t know why the third would be different. I’m about to start on the third now, so I’ll report back.
Aestas says
Well that’s great to hear!! Thanks for the feedback 🙂
Ari says
I’ve read those books for the first time 2 years ago and I could never find anyone understanding what I’ve felt. Your description is PERFECT ! I’m glad to see other people have read this trilogy several Times and are still loving it !
Meghan W says
Halfway through the Bronze Horseman I was pretty much cursing you and deciding never to listen to you again! Had I not followed you for YEARS and agreed with you on the majority of your recommendations I’d have given up.
So I’m finally to the part where they’re married and I confess I am strongly tempted to stop here because at least I have resolution even though at this point the happy point I have was NOT worth the pain (and multiple nightmares) it took to get here. However I trust you (albeit a little less freely than I did a few days ago I confess!) so I just bought book 2 so I’d have it at the ready! Really hoping this end up being worth all the horror you have to wade through to get there – LOL 🙂
Aestas says
Don’t stop. I PROMISE it’s worth it 🙂
May says
Took you advice and started reading it. Finished all three books in a week. Best Choice Ever! Thanks alot for your superb recommendation. Keep up the good work!
Love the series <3
Laura says
I’m nearly half way through The Summer Garden and I only just found out it was the third in the series!!! Do I stop now and read the Bronze Horseman first? Does it matter? Will finishing the Summer Garden ruin the first two books that I haven’t read yet? Help 🙁
Aestas says
Yikes. Yes. Stop and start with The Bronze Horseman. Reading The Summer Garden first will ruin everything for the story.
Shar says
When I read these books it was
The Bronze Horseman
The Bridge to Holy Cross
& The Summer Garden
I then bought Tatiana & Alexander to find it is Tye bridge to Holy Cross. Fantastic books as are all the other books Paullina Simons has written
Ireri Medrano says
You have got to check out the Somethkng in the Way series by Jessica Hawkins! It’’a the only other series that has even come close to The Bronze Horseman for me!
Ruth says
ok,I have to go read this book
Anastasia says
I feel like I should add my comment, given this is my favourite book series as well! I was asked to read this book by a colleague back on 2001 as she didn’t understand the word Orbelli, and wanted to see if I understood it, of course I couldn’t do that without context so I ended up reading the whole book! I just loved it so much! But it was 3 years before the second book was released! The trilogy remains my favourite ever!! I’ve been a huge fan of Paullina Simons since and have been fortunate to meet her a couple of times too!
Mimi says
This is my favourite story ever written too. I fell in love with the characters, especially Alexander. I first read the series in 2012 and I remember many ‘staring at the ceiling in depressive sadness’ episodes I had while reading the trilogy. When I was done with it, I was a wreck. I so looked forward to finding my own Alexander.
For years I avoided reading the books, even though they were my favourite, because of the feelings they elicited within me. Even seeing a quote about Lazarevo was enough to put me over the edge. It’s weird. I’ve never had this strong of an emotional connection to any piece of art or entertainment, whether it’s literature / music / television. Only The Bronze Horseman series.
Being in a pandemic and all, I decided to re-read. Wow. Read them all in five days. I just couldn’t stop. I am so heartwrenchingly jealous of the emotional connection Alexander and Tatiana have. The tragedies they had to face just to survive and be with each other. Just wow. Do you think it’s possible for two people, in real life, to have the kind of connection they have?
Aestas says
I can totally relate to what you said (“I’ve never had this strong of an emotional connection to any piece of art or entertainment, whether it’s literature / music / television. Only The Bronze Horseman series.”) – I feel exactly the same about these. Like it’s just on a whole other level that absolutely nothing else I’ve ever seen, read, or listened to has ever even touched. And it’s not just about the emotions they evoke because other books have made me cry/sob, but it’s about the epic level of the story. I honestly can say I don’t know of any other book/series/movie/show/play that has ever even compared.
To answer your last question: yes, I absolutely believe (and know) that that kind of connection can (and does) exist in real life. 🙂
Lisa says
Love, love, love this epic story! They are sooo real, I feel I could go visit.
Megan | Bookstacks & Golden Moms says
I feel the same way about any Melissa Foster book I’ve ever read. Her characters pull me in and don’t let go until I’ve been sobbing like a child and happy crying at the same time. So glad you enjoy this so much!
