First of all, I just want to say how much I just love seeing all these books in my local book store! I read most of them (or the first in the series) when they were originally released as indies so seeing them all together in a huge book store now is just kind of awesome!!

Book Review – Entwined With You (Crossfire #3) by Sylvia Day

I LOVED THIS BOOK!!! 5++ STARS!

Entwined With You was everything I could have wanted! I was thrilled with the story, happy with the ending and now am excited for the next books!

This review is spoiler-free.

Since this is book #3 in the series, I am not going to talk about the plot at all here. This book is not a standalone and should only be read after both Bared To You and Reflected In You.

First you can all rest easy because there is NO RELATIONSHIP CLIFFHANGER!!! In fact, of all the three books so far, I’d say this one had the most resolved ending of all. It ended at a point where Gideon and Eva were together and happy. Yes, there were still many unanswered questions for future books (mostly regarding external plot lines and milestones that Gideon and Eva still have to cross) but there was no relationship cliffhanger!

There was also real no stupidity and no cheating throughout the book. Yes, the characters made mistakes, but they’re only human. I ‘understood’ everything that both Gideon and Eva did throughout the book. I understood why they messed up and I respected them for trying to fix their mistakes.

There was a lot of smokin’ hot sex (and I mean H.O.T.) but it didn’t overpower the actual work they put into the relationship. I loved that they didn’t use sex as a distraction for working out their issues. They’d always had intense chemistry and sexual attraction but they were also actively focused just as much on working on the rest of their relationship as well which made them functional as a couple both inside and outside of the bedroom.

I loved that they had this intensely passionate, tumultuous relationship but at the core of it all was always their strong, unwavering love for each other. Everything else was just details.

Entwined With You started off right where book #2 ended throwing us right back in the story. If it has been a while since you’ve read the last book, I would recommend re-reading at least the last chapter of book #2 before starting this just to get yourself back into the details of the story.

In this book, Gideon and Eva’s journey continues as they fight their inner demons and nightmares and work together at maintaining and building a functional relationship filled with intense desire, love and commitment.

One of my most favorite things about Gideon and Eva as a couple is that they TALK!!! They talk through EVERYTHING! They’ve both been broken by their pasts and are dealing with untold amounts of external stress and yet with them, their relationship always came first. I always knew what their top priority was. I could just feel it. And I absolutely freaking LOVED it.

“I look at you, angel, and I want you so badly. I want to be with you, listen to you, talk to you. I want to hear you laugh and hold you when you cry. I want to sit next to you, breathe the same air, share the same life. I want to wake up to you like this every day forever. I want you.”

Gideon Cross is the ultimate tortured, Alpha hero. He’s completely dominant and possessive but at the same time so vulnerable and broken. Truthfully, protective and possessive doesn’t even begin to describe him though. He’s also loyal, understanding, powerful, and passionate. He is just the perfect balance of everything in my eyes. He is Alpha enough to make me swoon but was always logical and rational in his actions. I absolutely loved that he always put Eva first. He was always thinking of her and it was clear in each one of his actions. If it’s possible, I love him even more after reading this book than I did before starting!

I’ve always really loved Eva too. Deeply scarred by her past and also still hurt by things that had happened in their relationship (despite it being a missunderstanding), she had to work hard to keep being open. Luckily, Gideon helped balance her out. He was always insisting on working things through together. And at the end of the day, they both just wanted to make things work, and were willing to do anything to bring them closer to each other.

I loved that they went toe to toe on everything. Yes, Gideon was powerful and dominating but Eva was also strong and independent. They didn’t clash, but rather they complimented each other. Their relationship was always balanced and I could never doubted the value they placed on their relationship. You could feel that they were willing to sacrifice anything for each other and never give up. I just loved it. It was heart warming to an extreme.

“Despite everything, we were stronger than we’d ever been.”

And the HEAT!!!! ohhhhh the intensity!! This has got to be one of the hottest books I’ve ever read! Not that it was literally the most graphic but just that their connection intensified every sexual encounter between them. It was scorching!! Sizzling! And, I’m not going to lie, they certainly took things further in the bedroom than they’d ever gone before. There was definitely an “oh my!!” moment for me at one point 😉

But like I said, I loved that with them it was never all about the sex. I loved watching them genuinely, step-by-step work through their issues. I loved being able to see their progress and to see them grow both as individuals and as a couple.

The build up of the book’s ending wasn’t as intense as the last one to be sure but that was totally okay with me. Given the context of the story, it didn’t feel right to have something super intense in that moment and I’m glad the author didn’t put some random drama there just for the sake of sensationalizing it. I respect her for staying true to the characters.

The ending left us in a good place. My heart is happy and I couldn’t have asked for a better place to pause their story while we wait for the rest of the series to be released.

It has been confirmed that there will be 2 more books in the series after this one. The Crossfire series will now have 5 books.

I have loved this series from the start and if the next two books are going to continue Gideon and Eva’s story following the same path that these first 3 books have taken and just continue to develop their relationship together without stupidity or excess drama, then I’m all for it!!! 🙂

At first, I thought I would have wanted the “happily ever after” we would have gotten had this been the final book but I can honestly tell you that I did NOT feel that any of the issues were dragged out, or just “put there” for the sake of creating more text. There was no “drama for drama’s sake” and everything that happened both made sense, kept me engaged (or fanning myself) and was believable for the characters.

Also, given the amount of issues they still have to work through (which I won’t name in order to keep this spoiler-free), I’m honestly very happy that they’re getting more books. I think their story could easily take two more books to tell it in and there are still so many things that I personally WANT to see them work through that we would never have been able to see if the story had wrapped up in just this one book.

I know some people said that the ending left them “desperately wanting more”, and while I respect their opinion, I just don’t get it to be honest. The story HAD to end somewhere and since we know there will be more books I was completely happy with the ending. Yes, in the issues external to the relationship, there are still unanswered questions but, if there weren’t any, then how would we ever have more books??

Gideon and Eva were happy and together at the end. For the ending of a mid-series book, I couldn’t have asked for anything better.

Personally, I loved it. Totally loved it. Gideon and Eva continue to be one of my absolute, all time favorite book couples and I can’t wait for more of their story!

Basically, if you loved the first two books, you should absolutely read this!!

Book Review – Darkness Before Dawn (Darkness #2) by Claire Contreras

I’ll start out though by saying that you absolutely must read book #1 “There Is No Light In Darkness” first. This book is a direct continuation of that story (see my review).

After the huge cliffhanger at the end of the first book, I was just absolutely desperate for more!! I needed to know what happened! Just like with the first book, I inhaled this one in one sitting. The next thing I knew I looked out the window and the sun was coming up!

In this book the plot thickens, answers are found and family loyalties are chosen. Book #1 was equal parts mystery and romance. The mystery kept me guessing and the romance kept me swooning. But I found this book to be more focused on the mystery than the romance. Now, don’t get me wrong, Cole and Blake are still both heavily featured in this book and there’s both swoon and steam but I guess I felt that their relationship development took a bit of a back seat in light of all the developments happening on the mystery side of things. I did miss the relationship focus, but I also understood the need to delve into the mystery.

Blake needed answers, Cole needed answers, heck I needed answers! And this was the point where the secrets began to unravel – the answers to WHY everything had happened. But I found myself getting a little lost at times. There were a LOT of interconnected characters to keep track of and I really mean a LOT. My head was spinning in circles and sometimes I found myself getting a little tangled in the story line. But it did feel good that Cole seemed to also be a little overwhelmed by it:

“Can someone get a pen and paper and start drawing out the family trees and everyone’s connection to everyone else?!” It just genuinely was a complicated situation.

This book is told in alternating POVs between Cole and Blake. Given the ending of the last book this made a lot of sense and I felt it added more depth to the story by allowing us to see more of what was going on. I also really enjoyed getting inside Cole’s head and seeing how he saw things:

“Some of my friends that haven’t been around us have given me shit… because they don’t understand our relationship. They say it’s not normal, not healthy, and I get that, but we can’t change our past. We’re just two broken people in love trying to heal each other and despite everything, we don’t want to be with anybody else… When it comes to Blake, nobody else matters.”

Seriously that man was devoted. Utterly, head over heels in LOVE with his girl. You never doubted it, you always felt it, he took every opportunity to show it, and I just find it seriously heart-melting reading about guys like Cole who will literally go to any lengths to protect the ones they love.

I found there to be a lot less angst than in the first book. This one didn’t really make my heart race in the same way and, like I said, was very focused on finding answers to the mystery. There were still some heart-stopping moments though, an awesome showdown and reveals I didn’t see coming.

The romance was there and Cole was swoony as ever (seriously, is that man perfect or what?) but I’d say the focus of this book shifted more towards piecing everything together and deciding how to move on.

Oh, and this is pretty cool — there is a little almost-cameo from a certain book hero from another book that I know several of you are in love with. I thought it was a cool touch to connect those two stories like that.

I loved the message this book had about family. How blood is not the most important connection. Family is an earned place. Family are the people who matter to you the most no matter who they may biologically be. A father, a brother, a mother, a sister… these are not only determined by blood.

“You’re not just involved with the person that makes your world make sense. You live for that person. You breathe for that person.”

I liked this book (in comparison to the first one which I loved), but it kept my interest throughout and I desperately wanted to find out the answers to what was behind everything, it didn’t quite affect me as strongly in an emotional way. There were parts that were confusing as I was reading (but I guess that’s to be expected in a mystery) and a few time jumps that disconnected me just a little bit but I liked that we finally got the answers to everything and it did all make sense in the end.

It was really wonderful to see Cole and Blake find their happiness, answers and peace of mind in the end. I loved the ending and where it left the characters. There was a lot of sweetness in the last scene and I finished the book with a smile on my face and a happy feeling in my heart. After everything they’d been though, those two had really earned their happily-ever-after.

I would have wished for an epilogue but I’ve been told the author is writing one (I hear it is LONG!) and will be releasing it very soon for anyone who wants a glimpse into Cole and Blake’s future. Personally, I can’t wait!!

This series was a wonderful read and refreshingly different from any previous book I’d read. I’d certainly recommend checking them out!

I’m definitely a new fan of Claire Contreras and will be looking forward to more books from her in the future!

Book Review – Fire Inside (Chaos #2) by Kristen Ashley

“We have a future,” Hop informed me.
“We don’t.”
“Lady, we do.”

Ok. I’ll be honest here – when I first heard that book #2 in this series was going to be about Hop and Lanie, I kind of went “huhhhhh???” Hop just never really screamed ‘hero’ to me but I had faith in KA. If there is any author that could turn my head around and literally make me fall in love with just about anyone, it was KA. As an author, she has earned my trust over and over and over again with her mile-long list of phenomenal books.

I read the first page and it felt just like coming home. KA’s writing has such a wonderful rhythm and feel to it. You can just fully immerse yourself in this badass world.

Poor Lanie had really drawn the short end of the stick in life – both in her childhood and then with her first husband. But according to Hop, Lanie was just some kind of crazy given some of her past life choices. When her late husband had gotten himself involved with the Russian mob just in order to get a particular kind of flower (yup, flower!) for their wedding and subsequently gotten himself shot to death (wounding her in the process) over it, she’d stood by him… and that rankled Hop just a wee bit. He had some issues seeing the logic with that stand but had since decided that despite being hot, Lanie was somewhat certifiable.

That being said, when she walked right up to him and said, “Wanna fuck?”, certifiable took a back seat on the importance scale… but soon what was supposed to be just a one-night stand turned into so much more as their emotions began to be involved and deeper emotions started to take hold.

“Anything you need, baby, I’m there for you one way or another.”

One thing that threw me a little that I’ll mention right here at the beginning was the timeline. This book actually takes place almost at the same time as book #1, Own The Wind. For some reason, I expected it to be a continuation but it wasn’t. So maybe just bear that in mind when you read because some of the events that Chaos deals with are the same between the two books.

I have to say how much I really just love KA dialogue. It just follows it’s own rules, you know? Sometimes it’s wordy as hell but you just love it because you’re able to completely connect to the speakers feelings simply because there’s nothing held back… and sometimes only one single word is all that’s needed to convey every single emotion that the character is going through.

As a reader, I had an interesting like/dislike relationship with Hop. It was mostly ‘like’ but there were a few things that rubbed me a little bit the wrong way. He was just a little bit of an asshole at times… or, rather, a better way to say it was that he was sometimes bossy in a way that pissed me off. But I guess that comes part and parcel with the whole ‘badass biker’ package and, most importantly, underneath it all he had a logic to what he was saying that, despite it ticking me off, I couldn’t help but see. And once I felt like I ‘understood’ him, he was a pretty easy guy to love. Loyal. Protective. Badass.

Both Lanie and Hop had had hard lives and had been forced to learn the painful way not to trust people — even the people they should have been able to depend on and truth. And this book was really about them finding stability and trust in each other. I absolutely love this quote:

“… [he] used you as a shield… No way would I let you put yourself in the path of anything for me… You’ll learn to trust me, the brothers, Tack. I don’t use you as a shield. I am the goddamn shield.”

I have to admit, when I first met Hop in Motorcycle Man, I did judge him harshly given the whole incident going on there (it’s a bit of a spoiler so I won’t mention it). But in this book, when his whole story came out, I honestly just felt bad for him and because of hearing everything, all of his actions and decision became understandable. See? I told you KA could make me fall for anyone!

And, I just have to share this quote ‘cuz it made me laugh!

“Got rules for the woman I take to my bed. No sleep. Don’t ever wake up to a woman. It sends the wrong message. Really no fucking tee. Bitches claim tees.”

I really liked that, for the most part, Hop really insisted on pushing through to making things work with Lanie. He could really sense that something about her was broken and wanted to help… whether she wanted it or not 😛

“I’ll wear you down,” he proclaimed.
“No, you won’t,” I denied.
“You won’t let me in, I’ll break in, sneak in, blast in,” he promised.

“Baby,” his lips dropped to mine but his eyes didn’t let mine go, “Christ, I’m beggin’ you, let me in. Let me help. Let me in so I can untie that shit you got wound up inside you.”

That being said, they both did have their moments of stupid and miss-communication. I wasn’t thrilled about those but was happy that they did work everything out.

One of my favorite elements of KA’s writing is the way she describes family dynamics. It really brings a nice touch that rounds the story out separate from the romance only.

This book felt a little different than some of the other KA ones. For one thing, there was no 90% freak out (possibly due to the timeline of this one matching up to the last book). In case you’re new to KA books, nearly every single one of her books has this point at about 90% where the shit just HITS the fan. Bigtime. And it’s this huge adrenaline rush of craziness that has your heart in your throat and flipping pages like crazy and is them (usually) followed up by a heart-clenching epilogue. I had to admit that I love looking forward to that in a book and, despite this book being good and my enjoying it, I did really miss it here.

All in all though it was a good book. It didn’t fully have that KA spark that just makes me go absolutely crazy for some of her books but I still enjoyed my read and am looking forward to the next book she releases.

Kristen Ashley is one of those authors whose books are auto-buys for me. I’ve never disliked one of her books and each time I’ve been taken on a fun, badass ride. I look forward to every one!
