Book Review — The Deep End by Kristen Ashley

Book Review — The Deep End by Kristen Ashley

Olivier isn’t sure what he’s gotten himself into when he joins the Honey Club, only that a dark part of him hungers for the lifestyle offered by this exclusive club. Here, no boundary will be left untested…and one’s deepest fantasies will become an exquisite reality.

Holy hell, this book was HOT! Passionate, wildly sensual, and boundary pushing, but oh-so addictive! I have loved everything Kristen Ashley has written for years, and even though I absolutely adore her usual style, it was thrilling to see that this book had some very different elements than her usual! It was INTENSELY EROTIC in a way that was incredibly sexy but definitely made me uncomfortable at times, however it had a very beautiful love story at its heart. Please be VERY OPEN MINDED when you read this book. When I first saw the blurb, I was wary because an ‘alpha submissive’ isn’t the kind of hero I’d usually choose to read about but let me assure you that he really was ALPHA!! Olivier was heart-meltingly sweet, deeply protective, incredibly loyal and I fell completely in love with him. Not to mention that Amelie was perfect for him. I loved him. I loved them. I loved this book!

I’d like to think of myself as a pretty open-minded non-judgemental person (and reader). I have a few hard limits but generally my stance is that as long as the characters are consenting and happy, I don’t really judge their kinks. That being said, I also know what I like and I tend to seek that out in the books I read. I love ALPHA heroes — the kind that Kristen Ashley is famous for writing — and when I saw that this hero was an ‘alpha-sub’, I was both intrigued and wary. Would he really be a believable Alpha? Would I like him? Fall for him? How could he be both an Alpha and a sub — weren’t those kind of contradictory? Bear in mind that I’m not hugely versed in the BDSM world so this isn’t my specialty or anything. I just know what I know from various books and even then, I had yet to encounter an alpha-sub hero. However, what I did know was that Kristen Ashley has never let me down so if she felt this was a story worth writing, then I absolutely was on board to read it.

Here’s the blurb…

Enter a decadent sensual world where gorgeous alpha males are committed to fulfilling a woman’s every desire…

Olivier isn’t sure what he’s gotten himself into when he joins the Honey Club, only that a dark part of him hungers for the lifestyle offered by this exclusive club. Here, no boundary will be left untested…and one’s deepest fantasies will become an exquisite reality.

When Amélie invites Olivier to surrender, she gives the alpha submissive what he craves. Soon they both find themselves falling harder than they ever anticipated—but as their connection deepens, the truth about Olivier’s past could destroy everything…

I went into this book completely blind. I didn’t know anything other than the blurb. And let me tell you… from the very first MOMENT that Amelie and Olivier met, MY HEART DID NOT STOP RACING!!!!

He was colossal.
A mighty beast.
A magnificent beast.
Exquisite.

She was on the verge of speaking when he did.
His direct gaze appreciative, an arrogant smile curving his full lips, he asked, “How you doin’, sweetheart?”

This was a real private message that I sent to a friend of mine while I was reading:

“OMG. OMG. OMG. SHE DID IT!!!! She literally wrote an alpha sub. Seriously. HE IS EVERYTHING!!!!!!! The cheekiness. The cockiness. The submission. The undeniable power and manliness. All these things you’d think would be contradictory but actually they’re just making him UNBELIEVABLY HOT!!!!!”

It made me positively giddy with joy to read such a complex hero! I loved the way he cheekily toed the line between Alpha man and submissive. His actions showing submission just as much as they reinforced his alpha nature.

“Am I amusing you?” she whispered…
His face set hard and his two words were so firm, the boulders again came tumbling.
“Absolutely not.”
“Then can you explain your humor?” she asked.
He shrugged. “Sure. You are un-fucking-believably beautiful. You’re also un-fucking-believably hot. But I wouldn’t guess with the acres that make all of you, every inch of it so damned sweet, you’re a walking wet dream, that when you get riled you’re also un-fucking-believably cute. And there is no way in fuck five minutes ago, you told me a gorgeous redhead was gonna lead me to a room and make me her pony, I would be cool with that. But standing here with you, I’m totally fuckin’ cool with that.”
It took a great deal, and she expended every bit of effort she needed to accomplish it, but at his final two points, Amelie didn’t blink.
Instead, she decided to finish this part up.
Immediately.
“I must confirm you have no boundaries or rules.”
“Got no rules or boundaries, babe.”

In fact, in some ways, you could argue that Olivier is in fact one of the most Alpha males that KA has ever written because if you take an Alpha and strip him of everything that would classically make him an Alpha — put him in a position of absolute submission — for him to STILL radiate that kind of undeniable power, possession, love, loyalty and protectiveness even in submission, almost makes him the strongest alpha of all.

He dipped close. “And Leigh-Leigh, I’m an alpha-sub and operative part of that in every sense… is alpha. No way I’m gonna leave any woman, much less one who means something to me, alone with a visibly ticked-off dude.” He shook his head when she opened her mouth. “It’s just not gonna happen.” He grinned again. “Now I get you can take care of yourself, at least verbally, though I know for certain you swing a mean bat. But I don’t give a fuck. I understand where you were and where you needed me to be in these halls when dealing with that fucker. But that’s the way it is.”
He gathered her closer and summed it up succinctly.
“Paddle my balls on Friday, but that’s the way it is.”

Amelie was also a fantastically strong heroine. Despite the fact that she was a Domme, I think it’s really important to remember that she was also a woman. She was more than her sexuality (an important theme within this book) and while she loved and craved the sexual connection that she and Olivier shared in their play, she was also simply a woman falling deeply in love with a man who made her heart race.

It was the best kiss of her life, lying under, holding close, and connected intimately with a man whose last name she didn’t know.

I think one of my favorite things within this book was the very clear distinction between Amelie and Olivier inside and outside of the erotic scenes they engaged in. They performed roles within their play, but they were also people outside of it and that distinction was so perfectly portrayed in this book.

Olly was Olivier, her alpha-sub, she his Mistress.
But when not in the scene it was different.
It was Olly, the alpha, and Leigh, his woman.

This is easily the most erotic book Kristen Ashley has written but the important thing that I cannot stress enough is that even though there are incredibly detailed sex scenes (that literally go on for pages) each and every sexual encounter that Olivier and Amelie share serves a purpose in building their relationship. There is literally no ‘sex for sex’s sake’ in this book — every single scene drives the story forward by either solidifying their bond or building trust between them that allows them to fall in love with each other outside of just their encounters in the Club.

I also really loved Olivier’s struggle within this story. He wanted Amelie’s world and everything she could offer him, but he had his own reservations and it wasn’t easy for him to surrender despite how deeply he craved it. I loved the way she pushed him just far enough to bring him deeper into her world but never enough to break him. And, more than anything, I loved that he was intensely tuned into everything she was doing — and I don’t just mean physically. He wasn’t just the blind recipient. He completely understood what she was doing and he craved it all the more.

Before she could even make eye contact, he kissed her… She melted into him and gave him his kiss, giving herself something even better.
Getting that kiss.
When he lifted his head, his eyes flashed and his lips tipped up in a grin.
“Now you can bring on the Mistress if you want, gorgeous.”
Amelie felt her own lips tip up. “You’re incorrigible.”
“And you fuckin’ love it.”

And seriously THE FEEEEEEEEELS!!!

Fucking hell, she did it for him.
Christ.
She was perfect.
And Olly knew in that moment that he’d do anything for her.
For as long as he had her.
Which he hoped like fuck was a very long time.

I really hope that whoever reads this book can see past the sex into the absolutely stunning love story that Amelie and Olly shared. The sex is absolutely HOT as hell. It’s erotic. Intense. WILD. But that alone wouldn’t be enough to make this book what it was. What made this book so special was AMELIE AND OLLY. It was them. The people. They were the heart and soul of the story and their romance was what I fell in love with.

“Something funny?” she asked.
“You’re cute when you’re bossy.”
She opened her mouth but he lifted his chin in a “shut up” gesture and kept going before she could get a word in.
“Cute but hot. When you’re workin’ me, it’s just hot, Amelie. So don’t get pissy.”

I’ve said this countless times before, but if you read KA enough, you’ll notice that she has almost her own dialect of English. It’s her own unique writing style that sets her apart from everyone else. It’s not only the dialogue, but her very descriptions that captures the actions and emotions of her characters in a way that puts you right there with them on every page.

In fact, I think what makes KA’s writing so amazing is her understanding of subtleties — how she gets, on such a deep level, how important even the tiniest difference in a breath, a look, a jaw clench, or touch is, and she isn’t afraid to take the time to describe a scene to you in every possible detail such that you end up feeling completely attune to the characters — and perfectly in sync with their thoughts, feelings, emotions, and experiences.

I do not think this book will be for every reader. In order to appreciate this book, I think you either have to have a very open mind or already be a fan of this subgenre. I will reassure you by saying that there is no cheating, no sharing, no stupidity, everything they did was fully consensual, and they were exclusive with each other, but some of the things they did may be shocking to some readers or even make them a little uncomfortable so I’d just like to urge every reader to be as non-judgemental as possible when reading. The way I looked at it was that, no matter how I personally felt about what they did, this was their love story, not mine, so as long as they were having a good time (which they clearly were), then I was happy. I just trusted KA, allowed myself to be a little scandalized, didn’t judge anything, and enjoyed the hell out of this book.

“You’re of course aware I should do something about you being so audaciously cheeky.”
Another darkness crossed his face. “What?”
“I shouldn’t allow you to be so cheeky with me.”
“Cheeky?”
“Impudent,” she explained.
The look fled. “You mean, in uppity, hot-chick speak, a wise-ass.”
Amelie couldn’t help it, she laughed softly.
“She’s got a pretty laugh, too, to go with that pretty accent,” he murmured and she saw his eyes on her lips… “Just sayin’, Mistress,” he stated her title like it was a nickname, something forbidden at the same time immensely alluring, “you don’t want me to be a wise-ass, best not invite me back to your barn. Think it’s a part of me you can’t get rid of by paddling my ass.”

This book is a full standalone — complete with epilogue — but it’s also the start of a new series of standalones. The next book will be about a different couple and I absolutely cannot wait to read it!

I’ve read and loved over 40 Kristen Ashley books. I adore her writing style, I always fall in love with her characters, and her stories never fail to make my heart race, but I was beyond thrilled to see her explore this new territory and deliver such a beautiful love story. This is Kristen Ashley as you’ve never read her before — and I loved every word!

Book Review — Rock Chick Reawakening by Kristen Ashley

Book Review — Rock Chick Reawakening by Kristen Ashley

“I’ve been waiting thirty-five years for you to come into my life.”

WOW!!! Kristen Ashley outdid herself with this gorgeous story! I was an honest blubbering mess and crying happy tears when I finished reading it because it had ALL THE FEEEEELS!! This was one of my most highly anticipated releases of the year and it was everything I’d hoped for and more! Pure Old School Vintage KA GOLD!

From New York Times bestselling author, Kristen Ashley, comes the long-awaited story of Daisy and Marcus. A prequel to Kristen’s Rock Chick series, Rock Chick Reawakening shares the tale of the devastating event that nearly broke Daisy, an event that set Marcus Sloan—one of Denver’s most respected businessmen and one of the Denver underground’s most feared crime bosses—into finally making his move to win the heart of the woman who stole his.

Now, you can read this as a standalone if you wanted to, or you could read it before reading the Rock Chick Series, or (like me) you could read it after the Rock Chick series. Honestly, either way, you’ll enjoy it! The story is primarily focused of course on Daisy and Marcus, but there are cameos from the Hot Bunch and the final epilogue takes place faaaaaaar into the future, so really, no matter how you slice it, this is a story that everyone can enjoy!

As many of you know, Kristen Ashley is one of my all-time favorite authors (click here for a list of all her books). I simply adore her writing style, characters, and stories. They’re heartfelt, powerful, sexy, and addictive. And within the first few pages of this book, she’d built up such a solid history behind Daisy that you completely understood the events that had shaped her from childhood into the woman she was today. It was such strong and solid writing. Truly a joy to read!

And seriously, the FEEEEEEEEEEELS!!! KA writes the best heroes of all time. Her men are Alpha in every way they should be — they’re protective, possessive, respectful, bossy but devoted, sweet and strong, and utterly badass.

Daisy is going to pull all your heart-strings. But Marcus will make you swoon with the way he was always there for her. His patience, devotion, and more importantly the absolutely heart-wrenchingly GORGEOUS reason behind it is utterly heart-melting! This was exactly the kind of story I most love to read.

Technically, this is a novella, but it’s a KA-style novella which means that compared to most books, this is practically a full-length book. I don’t have the exact page number but it’s 3000 Kindle Locations long. Most KA books are about 8-9000, but the average book is usually around 3900-4200 so you can see that this is definitely a full story.

I’ve purposefully not mentioned the plot because I don’t want to spoil any parts. I didn’t know anything other than the blurb (which I’ve posted above) before I started reading and I would encourage you to just dive right into this book because there are a lot of surprises along the way that I feel would be better to just enjoy as they’re revealed.

Oh and this story BUILDS!! I’ll admit there was a moment in the middle where I found it a bit slow, but seriously, just trust KA because OH MY GOD, the way she brings the layers of this story together is absolutely stunning!!! There are these little clues and moments from the beginning of the story that come back in such a deep, impactful way by the end that, in one scene for example, I read a NAME — just a name — and literally burst into tears.

SO SO SO SO BEAUTIFUL!!

Last but not least, HOLY GORGEOUS EPILOGUE!!! KA is the queen of epilogues but this one had me almost happy sobbing!! She really rocked it with this one. Such beautiful love and healing! I couldn’t have hoped for anything better. This is an absolute must read for fans of Alpha male romance and a stellar addition to the Rock Chick series!! I love love LOVED IT!!!

“I handle you with care. I’ll always handle you with care. I will never, not ever, Daisy, give you reason to leave me. I won’t cheat on you. I won’t beat you. The gambles I take will be in business only, but you’ll always be covered financially regardless. I like to drink but I never drink too much. I’ve never taken drugs in my life. I like control and you can’t be in control inebriated or stoned. To end, you’re safe with me. You’ll get from me only what you deserve, which is everything I can give you doing it handling you with care.”
“Okay, sugar.” She was still whispering.

“Is that completely understood?”

She nodded…

Regardless, he kept going.

“If I break any of those promises, you’re free to leave me. If I don’t, you’re not. Not ever. If something isn’t working, we’ll talk it out and make it work. Which means we’ll always make it work so there will be no reason to leave.”

Rating: 5 STARS! Contemporary Adult Romance. Can standalone. Part of the Rock Chick series — chronologically, it takes place before the series, but it can be read either alone, before, or after it.

Book Review — Four Letter Word by J. Daniels

Book Review — Four Letter Word by J. Daniels

“That’s ours, Wild. What we have, how we build on it, and I don’t give a fuck if it makes sense or not. It was fast but I don’t care. People might not get it like we do but again” — he dipped closer — “I do not fuckin’ care. What I do care about is you.”

Holy freaking hotness, I have WILD LOVE for this book!! If you’re a fan of sexy, tortured Alpha heroes who will make you combust with their hotness, break your heart with their pain, and then melt you with their sweetness, this is the book for you! I laughed out loud, teared up, swooned, and could not stop reading! This was exactly the kind of book I love to read — a UNIQUE, ADDICTIVE, SWOON-FILLED ROMANCE!! Easily one of my 2016 Top Favorites!

First things first, here’s what the story is about…

Sydney Paige was never so mortified to hear the words “wrong number” in her life. She meant to tell off the guy who broke her best friend’s heart, but unleashed her anger on a perfect stranger instead. And now her world is turned upside down by the captivating man who wants to keep her on the line.

Brian Savage is living a life he’s quickly come to hate — until her wild rant has him hooked and hungry for more. Soon the sexy woman on the phone becomes the lover in his bed. But Brian has secrets, and the closer he lets her get, the harder it is to shield her from the devastating mistakes of his past…

Intriguing, right?? 😀

I totally loved the thrill of them connecting only over the phone in the beginning of the story. There was something so intimate and intriguingly mysterious about completely opening up to a stranger you’d never met and yet somehow knowing that you could trust them. And it led to a rather unusual situation where the hero and heroine fell in love practically before they’d even met. And you know what? I totally believed it. I think if someone had just told me about their situation, I might have been skeptical, but having read it, what they had made complete sense to me.

“Told you I was gone for you,” he started. “Think you know what that meant. Think you might be feeling me the same way and that’s what you were wanting to tell me.” He ran his thumb along my jaw… “Am I right?”
I nodded. “Yes.”
“Good,” he said, smiling. “That’s ours, Wild. What we have, how we build on it, and I don’t give a fuck if it makes sense or not. It was fast but I don’t care. People might not get it like we do but again” — he dipped closer — “I do not fuckin’ care. What I do care about is you.”

Now, let me tell you — I did not see Brian’s secret coming. Or rather, I thought it would be something that affected him — but not them, so it was completely unexpected! But I loved the twist it put on the story. And the more we found out about the backstory behind what was driving him to do the things he did, the more my heart broke for this man. I actually completely understood why he wanted to keep this side of himself a secret from her — it’s just not the kind of thing that comes up easily in conversation — especially not at the beginning of a relationship, and even more so given that their relationship had such an odd manner of development. But I was worried about it because as soon as he realized that he had real feelings for her, the way he chose to handle his “situation” would literally determine whether I loved or hated his character. And I have to say that I am so pleased to say that I loved the way he handled it. I’m not an overly judgy person so I wasn’t bothered by what he was doing in principle — especially given his motivation behind it. But I was concerned about what it meant for their relationship. But the way he handled it made me respect his character SO much. Even the mistake he made was understandable and the way he went about fixing it absolutely MELTED MY HEART!!! Gah. Seriously. What an amazing guy. You guys have to meet him!

I would never fucking hurt her. I’d die first.
That’s how far past gone I was.
And her knowing what I’d been doing before we had whatever the fuck it was we had could hurt her, in some way or another, so… I just held on to the one piece she didn’t need to feel. I did it to protect her. She didn’t need to know that ugly, and I was done with it.
All of it.
I’d make good of that as soon as I could. Maybe one day I could tell her everything, but I needed this to be solid first. I needed to make sure I had her in a place where, when I didn’t tell her, she’d understand why I did it. Getting there might take a while, but I wouldn’t keep this from her forever.
She was my girl.

Everything about this book just worked for me. I loved their characters both individually and together as a couple, I understood their mistakes, but respected the way they fixed things, and I was really rooting for them to be able to make their relationship work and wished for nothing more than to see them find their well-deserved happiness.

AHHHHHH this book was seriously just amazing!

SEXY. CONSUMING. PASSIONATE.
HEART-BREAKING. EROTIC. SWEET.

I couldn’t get enough of it!

This book wasn’t just an addictive story, it was also very well structured. I don’t know the author personally, but just from reading it alone, I can tell that a lot of work went into making this book and polishing it. The story had strong pacing, well-developed and complex characters, a great balance between humor and emotions, the hotness was incorporated in the story in a way that made it quite erotic but also never overtook the heart of the story, the dialogue was on point, the characters made believable choices, there was no stupidity, and it had an extremely satisfying and full-filling ending (yes, with an epilogue). From beginning to end, this book really impressed me.

“I don’t understand what it was about you, but since that first day, that first text you sent me, it was perfect and everything I needed and you knew.” I lifted my head to look at him. “You just knew the right things to say and the right times to call. You healed me. You didn’t know it but you did.”

All the side characters also stole my heart. I know that several of the other couples will be getting their own standalone books next and I’m very eager to read them all. It’s been a long time since I’ve cared about a group of characters so much from just the first book alone that I already know I want to read all their stories but I can honestly say I’m looking forward to each coming book. Also, the story is told in first person and alternating POVs.

“Knew you two were serious, but shit, not gonna lie, I didn’t think you were talking about moving in together yet. Not sure this is normal.”
“Normal for us.” I shrugged. “Don’t give a fuck what anyone else thinks.”

And finally I want to mention that if you’re a fan of Kristen Ashley, then you should definitely read this book. One of the most common questions I get asked as a blogger is for recommendations of what to read after KA and to be honest, it’s hard to name books that stand up to that quality. But THIS BOOK DOES. In all my years of blogging, this would the #1 book that I would recommend to KA fans. It’s unique in its own right, but this author has definitely captured that same “possessive protective Alpha male” romance spark. I absolutely adored the writing style!

“Why are you calling me babe?”
I inhaled through my nose quickly, priming to respond when she filled in our silence.
“I like it,” she added softly, nearly a whisper, as if she was afraid to admit her honestly out loud. “I like Wild, too. I understand Wild, but babe? That’s a sweet name, and… really, I was terrible to you.”
“Got another suggestion?”
“Besides Wild? Satan.”
This time I didn’t keep my laughter quiet.
“You aren’t Satan, babe. You got sweet in you. A lot of it. Heard it in your voice even when you were laying into me, showing me your wild.”
“What?” she snapped. “I was not sweet when I was laying into you. I was feisty and a total badass. My best friend told me so.”
“You were a badass,” I agreed, doing it smiling. “But you were sweet, too.”

If you’re a fan of sexy Alpha male romance and you want a unique, addictive, all-consuming story to fall in love with, then READ THIS BOOK!! It is officially one of my top favorites of the year!! I can’t recommend it highly enough!

Rating: 4.5+ stars. First standalone in series of standalones. Adult romance.
