SQUEEE!!! This is now live!! It’s the latest Addicted series book (the 7th one) and I absolutely LOVED every word!! — Read my review — Without a doubt, this is my #1 Top Favorite “on-going” series. It’s sexy (I mean really, holy hotness!!), it’s romantic (their love story has ALL THE FEELS), it’s heart wrenching (I’ve cried more than once), but also heart warming and funny. The story is totally unique and it’s everything I could ever want in a series delivered with some of the best writing I’ve read. I HIGHLY recommend it for all fans of romance.

NOTE: This series must be read in order. These are NOT standalones. However, there are no cliffhangers now so you are safe to start reading. They are all full-length novels. Bright Side by Kim Holden — Reader Recommendation!!

I’m sneaking this book onto this list because I’ve had countless readers tell me that it’s an absolute MUST-READ. I’m told it’s a hugely emotional “ugly cry” book, but I literally get daily messages from readers telling me just how much they LOVED it. So, if you haven’t read it yet, and you’re in the mood for a tear-jerker, definitely try it out!! (PS: Just as a warning, this is a bit of a rule-breaker book for me. But I’m told that it’s worth it!!)

Book Review — Sociopath by Lime Craven

Let me explain the one thing that makes me different to you.
I have no conscience.

Woah. This book totally messed with my mind. Even now, as I write my review, I still have no idea what to think… But, without a doubt, it was very well written and downright FASCINATING.

This is a standalone dark romance (yes, there is a love story) and I’m not gonna lie that some parts made me very uncomfortable (it’s really not for the faint of heart!!) but I found myself SO curious about this guy and the way he looked at the world. Here’s a taste into the mind of Aeron Lore…

“I control a billion dollar fortune. I control the news. Give me five minutes and I’ll control you, too. If you could read my mind, you’d probably call me perverted. Unnatural. Manipulative. But I’ve learned to blend in, to be funny and charming. A predator in a designer suit.

I never meant for this to be a love story…

There’s no control here. And what do monsters like me do when control leaves the building?

We attack.”

It was a twisted mind fuck of a read! As per the title of the book, the hero was a sociopath and the entire book is told to us from his POV — as though you’re reading his mind and experiencing his every thought. His inner voice was just fascinating. I know I keep coming back to that word, but its the best one that fits.

“I don’t want to be a hero. Not unless it serves a purpose. I like the shadows better, where the dark things hide.”

This guy literally had no conscience… but I wouldn’t say he was a monster. He wasn’t evil, he was just… self-serving. He was highly intelligent — a self-made millionaire — with a gorgeous body, a trustworthy face, kinky bedroom preferences, and a dark secret in his past that he went to great lengths to keep hidden. It was such an interesting balance. In so many cases, he showed a side of him that made you feel like he was caring, but when you saw the reason behind it — the cool logic — it made you second guess everything you were seeing and feeling. His own personal gain was the most important thing to him, but his purpose was never to hurt anyone maliciously. He just didn’t really care about them. Much.

“I got nothing. There’s just an empty space where my fucks ought to be.”

This isn’t really a heart-in-your-throat intense page turner. In fact, the pacing is generally slow, and it didn’t evoke any strong emotions from me, but I found it was more of a book that I just could not stop reading because I was just so intrigued by the story and this character and his unique view of the world.

The writing was the highlight of the book for me. I thought this author did a fantastic job of capturing this guy’s voice and making you genuinely believe in his character.

I will warn you though that there are some things in the book that will undoubtedly make some readers uncomfortable. The only reason that I “went along” with it was that it was all consensual. Both him and the heroine wanted what he did so I tried to be accepting even though it kinda made me cringe. There’s no rape or beating or anything. His kink is that he cuts her during sex — not gruesomely, just like a 1-inch cut somewhere — and the thing is that she liked it too. This was something they both enjoyed… and because of that, I tried to not judge even though it went way outside my comfort zone and kinda grossed me out.

Remember too that this is a love story. A deeply twisted love story, but it definitely is one. The question at the heart of it is — Can a sociopath fall in love? … Well, it seems they can. But, like with everything else about them, it’s in a very different way. And it takes a very special type of partner to be with them.

“Why aren’t you afraid of me?”

Honestly, I don’t think this book will be for everyone. Personally I really enjoyed it, and I loved the writing, but I know this isn’t a book that everyone will unanimously love. It’ll be up to each reader to decide for themselves. But if you’re a fan of darker romance and mind-fucky reads, and you’re in the mood for something really different, then definitely give this a try.

I have no idea what to rate it. That’s not a bad thing at all, so please don’t think that. It’s just that I find with some books that it too hard to label my feelings with a single number.

Standalone dark romance. No cheating, no triangle, some violence, some things that’ll be uncomfortable to read, but nothing non-consensual. HEA.

Sequel is optional (it is a continuation, not a standalone).

Book Review — Bait (Wake #1) by M. Mabie

FUUUUUUUCKKKK!!!! Yes, I’m swearing. I need to. This book put my heart through the wringer. I hated it. I loved it. I hated that I loved it. But I just felt so much for it!!! Bottom line: If you want pure, heart-wrenching, addictive ANGST, then throw your judgments out the window and read this book!!!

I’m going to be honest, this was everything I hate reading about wrapped up in a book I didn’t want to stop reading. Ok. That’s a lie. I did stop. I actually started it a few days ago because OMG that blurb is amazing (see below), got to 15%, started feeling worried, so I went digging and found out what happened later in the book, freaked the HELL OUT, threw the book down and promised myself I’d never ever finish reading it… Six days later, I was STILL thinking about it in the back of my mind, so I picked it up again, wanting to read it JUST for my personal curiosity. But I couldn’t put it down this time and DAMMIT I KINDA LOVED IT. Even though I hated it. Gah. I don’t know what to think. Just read it. If you’re feeling brave… and want your heart shredded. But there’s a bit of hope given at the end. Yes, there’s cheating (a helluva lot of it). Yes, there’s a cliffhanger (their story is far from over). Yes, those are both the kinds of things that send me running for the hills. And yes, I still loved (hate-loved) the book.

He was trouble from the start, but I couldn’t resist.
[She was the best kind of trouble. The kind that was so wrong, it felt right.]

I’ve tried and failed to stay away from him.
[I’ve done everything in my power to make her mine and keep her.]

He’s almost impossible to say no to.
[She never tells me yes.]

We’re always fighting.
[When we’re not fighting, we’re… well… making up.]

He makes me laugh so hard.
[I miss her laugh the most.]

I’m a liar.
[She knows the truth, but won’t admit it.]

Sometimes, I wish I’d never met him.
[I wish we could meet all over again. I’d do better.]

His sweet girlfriend knows.
[The guy she’s with is a fool.]

I’ll never love anyone like I love him.
[She doesn’t love me enough to choose us.]

It was the wrong place.
[It was the wrong time.]

It should have been him.
[It will always be her.]

Emotionally, I would compare this book to Thoughtless. It is a different story, but puts your heart through the same kind of gut-wrenching angsty pain and also makes you experience similar frustrations. I think it’s safe to say that if you didn’t like Thoughtless, then this isn’t the book for you.

I want to explain the thing it was that made me go back to the book (other than just curiosity)… I think the “big issue” most people have with this story is with the heroine and with her inability to make the right choice and commit to being with the hero. And I feel like it took me a while to let that turn over in my mind but I came to a point where I kind of tried to stop judging her actions because I couldn’t change them and just tried to understand where she was coming from. Here’s the thing… She’d been with her boyfriend for years. They might not have had fairy tale love, but she did love him. He was a guaranteed, secure future. And throwing that all away for someone new who she didn’t know at all, who lived out of a suitcase, and who offered her an uncertain future would be a really terrifying situation for certain types of people. I’m not saying I agree with what she did, cuz I don’t. I think she took it too far. Way too far. But what I’m saying is that I got where she was coming from even though I hated her initial choices.

I think the whole point of her part of the story is a message about how, if you’re afraid to take a chance, that fear can actually destroy everything you’re working so hard to hold on to.

Casey was absolutely AMAZING. I promise you’ll fall in love with him (no matter how you feel about the story). He was just this totally swoon-worthy, wonderful guy who fell in love with a girl who was promised to someone else. It was totally heart-wrenching seeing just how much he loved her. And just how patient he was willing to be, and how much he was willing to sacrifice, along the road to making her his.

“She’d go back the next day and probably try to forget me. Probably try to forget we met at all. Well, fuck that. If I had anything to say about it, she wouldn’t ever forget me.”

Regardless of my rationalization, it fucking HURT to see two people who you knew in your heart belonged together … not be together. It was painful. I hated it. Even though I loved it. I just couldn’t stop caring. It even made me cry — for some reason that damn line about the shed did me in. Boom. Tears!!

Ok, now about that cliffhanger… I’m going to be honest, I hear the word “cliffhanger” and it sets me running. But I wouldn’t personally say that the cliffhanger was the most brutal part of the story. It actually kinda gave hope in a way even though there’s still so much more to their story to tell. I’ll be honest, it didn’t make me mad. As far as “stopping” points for trilogy books go, this one made sense to me. And I’m still really glad I read the book now even though I’m desperately looking forward to the next one.

I know that for some of you, this is a really scary book to consider reading — it has a lot of “hard limits” in it — so for you guys, I’ve created a full plot explanation with spoilers. If you want to see that, click here.

My advice: If you’re going to read this, don’t try to judge it. This is a story about flawed, imperfect characters who make mistakes and often make the wrong choice. But this is also a story about two people who you just know are meant to be together and have such a strong love for each other that it makes it really hard not to care for them and root for them to find a way to be together. The trick is getting to a point where you accept that shit is going to happen, and you can’t stop it, and accepting that you love the characters and story enough to just go on this crazy ride with them — wherever that may lead.

So, like I said, if you want pure, heart-wrenching, addictive ANGST, then throw your judgments out the window and read this book!!!

I LOVED this book!! An intense, heart-pounding love story unlike any other I’ve ever read!

I stayed up til 4AM to finish this story. I read it in one sitting and could not put it down even for a minute. The idea of the story was just so unique and it grabbed me from the start so I just had to read it!

The 29th of February, the day I was born.

When I wake up on this day, I’m in a different city, with a different life and no memory of the lives I had before this one. Today is the tenth time this has happened to me. The tenth time I’ve had to figure out where the hell I am. The tenth time I’ve had to try and work out who the hell I am. This is the tenth alteration of the person I am. Each of us has had different lives, different backgrounds and different families. But there’s always been one constant.

Him.

He’s the reason I keep doing this. He’s the reason I spend four years searching. If I’m lucky, I’ll get the trigger and find him quickly and we can spend those four years together before I disappear again. If I’m not, we might get a year, a month or even just a day. Once we got nothing, but that was a choice.

And every time it happens, he patiently waits for me. He says that every time I come back to him, it’s like falling in love with me all over again. I say that every time I come back, I fall even more in love with him than before.

It scares me that one day I won’t be able to find him at all, because when that day comes, I’m not sure I’ll want to keep going. He is my strength, my protector, my one and only constant.

I love him.
He loves me.
But every four years, I lose myself.
And every four years, I have to find him.
This is our story.

My heart was racing from start to finish!! It was pounding. My spine tingled. I had shivers running through me the whole time with the anticipation of finding out what would happen next. Every little hint, every new twist, every emotionally charged moment between them just added to my connection to the story.

I swear, I couldn’t flip the pages fast enough!

The story starts out when Evie and Ben are young children. Even back then, I loved how fiercely protective he was of her. They were just kids but you you could already feel his love for her and as the years went on, his love only got stronger. I just knew in my heart that they were meant to be together. For always.

“I promise I will always look after her.”
And somehow, I know he always will.

This is not what I would consider a paranormal story. I want to be very clear on that. There is no mystical or supernatural element ever mentioned. What happens to her simply happens. There is no explanation ever given and it’s never labelled, but more importantly, there is no reason for an explanation. I’ve thought about this a lot honestly and here’s the thing: If there was an explanation, it would make the story seem unbelievable because it would either be implausible in our real world (and therefore turn it into a paranormal story) or it would seem far fetched… and the thing is that this is a character-driven story. The point of the story is these characters’ lives and their intense, all-consuming love for each other. This is a story about how two people who are forever bound by love make things work in a seemingly impossible situation. The point is their love for each other, not discovering why this is happening to her. And personally, I think that’s a very important thing to remember. This is a love story.

“I love this man and every single thing he does for me, has ever done for me, ever since I was four years old.”

Every word of this story just flows. The writing is fluid and the plot is meticulously crafted so that the story is constantly moving forward with no slow spots at all. The intensity of the emotions just rolls off the page. I felt every word in my heart. The way this author wrote Evie and Ben’s connection and chemistry, the strength of their love, the struggle to regain memories, the impact when they all came slamming back, the missed encounters, the epic reunions, everything was so powerful. There were times when I was reading with tears in my eyes even though nothing sad was happening just because I cared so much and so desperately wanted them to be able to find a way to be together despite their impossible situation.

Minutes, seconds, days, years, this is a story of a never-ending love fighting against time. It’s honestly one of the best books I’ve ever read. It consumed me and took over my life. I loved every word. With most books, if even one scene makes me feel as much as this book made me feel in every scene, I’d consider it a winner. But this book was just a non-stop, heart-racing ride the whole way through.

“Hey, baby,” he says, his voice a whisper. “Miss me?”

There is no stupid drama. It might sound silly to say it but it’s a very important thing to me. The characters are human and do make mistakes (no cheating and no triangles, don’t worry) but their unwavering love for each other is what gets them through.

I loved how real this story felt. With the way that it was written, I honestly just accepted every situation as it was and was genuinely made to believe that these events really happened to this woman.

Some readers have asked me if the story is at all repetitive and the answer is NO. Not at all!! This is not a Groundhog Day scenario at all. I don’t want to give anything away but it’s always moving forward and changing. The author really did a fantastic job with the story development.

Ben Foster is guaranteed to melt your heart. The depth of his love for Evie was so powerful. He loved her unconditionally. His complete devotion to her and acceptance that no matter what, she was the love of his life was just gorgeous. Pure swoon. He protected her, fought for her, stood by her through everything. You knew he’d give anything for her and that there’d be no obstacle he wouldn’t face to be with her.

“I haven’t stopped loving you, Evie,” he whispers. “And no matter what happens or where you go, I won’t ever stop.”

I love the concept of a love so strong that no matter what, they keep finding each other over and over again. The idea that love is powerful enough to prevail over anything is the reason I love to read romance. I am so grateful to the author for stepping outside the box to give us this unconventional and incredibly beautiful book. It was unique, refreshing, thrilling, and this love story will stay in my heart forever.

“I’ll be here waiting for you,” he says, his eyes never leaving mine. “You just have to come find me, Evie.”
