LOVE LOVE LOVED this hilarious, romantic, action-packed book!!

Pure. Freaking. Gold.

This is probably the most all-out FUN book I’ve ever read! I mean, how can you not love a book about a smart, independent, sassy heroine and her Badass Extraordinaire hero getting together? huh? Its impossible not to I tell you. Impossible!

I cannot possibly gush enough. This book was BRILLIANT!! It had me flipping pages like mad, grinning endlessly and laughing and squeeing out-loud more times than I could count!

Its insanely well-written. Kristen Ashley has an absolute gift with words. Her writing style is so effortless, you feel like you are right in the head of the main character.

The book is never boring, there is no stupidity from the characters, and the drama in the background compliments the character development of the story rather than complicates it. Its a delicate balance that Ms. Ashley has really perfected!

The story is about India “Indy” Savage and Liam “Lee” Nightingale. Indy’s been in love with Lee since she was five. For reasons’ you’ll learn about, he couldn’t admit he felt the same way until very recently. But they basically grew up together, then Lee went off to join the Army/Special Ops and went from badboy to Badass Extraordinaire and now runs his own detective agency. Fast track to present day, Indy’s friend gets involved in some very shady business involving some illegally grown plants and million dollar diamonds, resulting in people shooting at them with guns and end up being helped out of the predicament by Lee… who of course uses this as the perfect stepping stone to finally get together with Indy.

“What was he playing at?
He told me.
And he told me bluntly.
“I do this thing for Rosie, you sleep with me”
I stared at him, open-mouthed and in stunned silence.
I did, of course, understand what he meant but he explained further.
“Not like last night, we’ll both be naked and sexual acts will be performed.”
My expression didn’t change except maybe my mouth opened wider.
“I’ll expect your participation.”
Holy shit.
“Your avid participation.”
Dear Lord in Heaven.
Eventually, I whispered, “You must be joking.”
He shook his head and watched me.
I dropped my eyes, unable to hold his stare.
“I think I need more coffee,”” 

Oooooo Lee. Liam freaking Nightingale. I love you. There I said it. He’s a wonderful hero – all delicious badass, uberly possessive, don’t-fuck-with-me-or-my-woman, Alpha male. He is YUMMY!!

“Girlie, he is fine. He’s fine times twelve. He’s the definition of fine.”
“I’ve been in love with him since I was five,” I told Tod. 
“I’m in love with him now. I want to have his children, Tod told me.”

I loved that he doesn’t play games,  is open and honest about his feelings and thoughts even to the point of being cocky but never hides anything. What you see is what you get. Oh, and did I mention he’s totally hot?

“Jesus,” he buried his face in my neck. “There’s nothin’ better in the world than hearing you say my name when I’m inside you.” He slid in deeper, filling me. “I’ve been waiting years to be right here.” 

And Indy was feisty, fun-loving, sassy, takes-no-orders-and-won’t-back-down-from-anything, funny, not at all annoying and totally lovable!

And I loved that they had known each other their whole lives instead of just meeting and hooking up. Its gave a familiarity to the characters – and made their fast relationship much more believable.

“I like that we have history and our kids will have a big family and share that history because there was never a time when their Mom and Dad weren’t together.” ~Lee

This book is full of typical KA fun – there are kidnappings galore, car chases, steamy bedroom scenes, swoony moments, outright hilarious moments, drag queen performances, shoot-outs, explosions, a seriously epic food-fight, and of course, a wonderful love story. Also, we get introduced to a bunch of wonderful side-characters who will be heavily featured in the rest of the series 🙂

I absolutely ADORED this book!! and I recommend it to everybody and anybody! Run and get this book – you won’t regret it!!

Blake Hartt (God, don’t you just love that name??) sees Livia McHugh every day at the train station. Every day she smiles at him, and he counts each of her smiles as though they were a precious gift. But Blake is homeless, no one sees him except Livia.

“No one has really seen me in years… But when you saw me for the first time, you actually saw me. You saw me, and then you smiled like I was just the same as everyone else on that platform.”

When some bullies try to pick on Blake one day, Livia steps in to defend him leading to their first official meeting. Each day they spend a little time together in the mornings and in the evenings, inexplicable drawn to each other until finally they can’t deny that what they have is more than just friendship.

Blake was a beautiful character. He was a refreshing change from so many typical male leads. He wasn’t dripping in money, he was vulnerable and deeply tormented by his past but oh-so-sweet, charming, thoughtful, and chivalrous beyond all means. He was both gentle in so many ways but growing in up in the foster system and being on the streets hardened him making him far from defenseless. I loved how he worship Livia – how grateful he was for every moment with her and treasured every aspect of her being.

“Blake…has a tremendous sense of pride, which he will not see compromised. He finds no glory in accepting help. If he hasn’t earned it, he wants no part of it.”

Livia was a strong female lead. She was kind, and caring, but very tough and not one to hide from a dangerous or difficult situation. I loved the way she saw Blake – she saw him for who he was as a man, not for for who his situation made him. She fell in love with him and didn’t care that they weren’t in the same tax bracket. She liked him, then she loved him, and that was all that mattered to her. Blake also had some issues left over from his horrible childhood and I loved that she dealt with them in such a non-judgmental, completely understanding way.

“Do you love him?”…
“I feel like I’ve always loved him, and now I just got lucky enough to find him.”

This book is almost equally about the side characters as it is about Blake and Livia. Blake’s two (foster) brothers, Beckett and Cole, play a huge and wonderful  in the story. Bound together by the horrors of their foster home, they forged a deep bond of family, love, loyalty and dedication to each other that you couldn’t help but feel your heart.

I loved Cole – he had a horrific past and got a delightful HEA in this book. But Beckett was the one who really stole my heart!!! He’s the big brother of the three and feels responsible for Blake and Cole. I LOVED him and I am ridiculously excited that he is getting his own book. He is like Kellan and Travis‘ long lost brother. He’s the one who gets his hands dirty to protect his brothers (who are, by the way, a seriously awesome kick-ass trio). He is, not out of choice but out of necessity, a pimp, a drug dealer, a murderer, but with a heart of absolute gold and there is nothing that he wouldn’t do or give up for his brothers and his family- he made me totally swoon-y! Did I mention I love him??

“I hit the streets first. So I knew what we were in for…To live in this world without a dime or a pot to piss in, you have to sell your soul or your body…I sold my soul, Livia, and I sold other people’s bodies. But when my brothers stepped out of our foster home…I had respect. Respect enough to keep their souls clean. I’m going to hell…for all three of us.”

The writing style really gives a beauty to the story – especially in regards to Blake and Livia’s scenes. They almost feel magical.

“He moved to her earlobe and breathed, “First, I will blow, then I will lick, last I will bite.” Blake took his time blowing an elaborate pattern on her stomach, and Livia was pretty sure he’d spelled the word torture.” 

“You make the rest of the beautiful things in the world cry for even trying at all. You make it hard for me to breathe.” 

And its a great contrast to the gritty feel of Beckett and Cole’s scenes. The author does a very good job of inserting humor to help lighten up the darker undertones of the story.

The first half of this book was wonderful- it made me want to give the book 5 stars. The story hooked me from the beginning, I loved the characters, and the writing style was beautiful. But I felt the second half of the story was brought down by all the drama. I felt that the story kind of exploded, it became a little less focused on the characters and I felt myself lose a bit of my connection to the story.

There really is a little bit of everything in this book: a beautiful love story (or two!), drugs, parties, a helluva lot of murders, kidnapping and hostages, creative swearing, steamy moments, gunfights, a jealous/scheming ex-boyfriend, quiet times in the meadow, midnight masses at church, vengeance sprees…

The book is really about finding ways to be together and not allowing the future to be ruled by the hurts of the past.

The story of a high-class male prostitute who falls in love with the reporter hired to write an article on him.

Adrian is every woman’s fantasy come true – he’s gorgeous, well-mannered, fabulously talented in bed, and for price of one thousand dollars per hour, he can fulfill their every secret desire, wish and pleasure. He works at Avalon, a high class club catering to women’s pleasure. Billie is a reporter hired to write an article about Avalon and the life of its companions. As Avalon’s most desired escort, Adrian is selected to be interviewed. From the first moment they meet, they feel drawn to each other. But despite their feelings, the nature of what Adrian does inevitably is a huge barrier between them. And throughout the story we see their journey as they follow their hearts to find what they want most from life and each other.

During the interview, Adrian tries a little to get Billie to give in to their clear mutual attraction. But he holds back knowing she isn’t quite ready.

“Ask me what happen next, Billie…”
“What happens next?”
“Nothing.” His whisper brushed her forehead, his embrace gentle, non-threatening. “You’re too frightened. But I know what you want, how much you want it. I can take one look at you and know what you need.” 

And that really is the core of the fantasy – a man who not only can do whatever a woman wants, but much more importantly who knows and can anticipate what she wants.

I liked that both Adrian and Billie were pretty smart about everything. Neither of them really made any stupid decisions that made me want to throttle them.

I liked how throughout the book, we discover who Adrian really is. On the outside, he’s this god-like fantasy man, but its not the real him. Throughout the story, Billie peels away the layers of his facade until she finds his true self.

“The fantasy was human after all…a prostitute. A gigolo. A beloved brother and son and uncle… with too many secrets and too much sexual prowess. A man she was falling in love with.”

But at his core, Adrian feels utterly unworthy of Billie.

“She wasn’t the kind of woman who could give away sex without giving away her heart, and he liked that in her, that vulnerability….Maybe, at the very bottom of it, he knew a whore – even a high-priced one –  didn’t deserve a woman like Billie. She was reality, gritty and truthful and tangible. He… he was a phantom born out of… imagination.”

“I’m nothing. I have nothing of value to give you. No heart, not an ounce of love in me. It’s all been fucked away.”

I loved that Billie never judged him for his choice of work. She accepted him for who he was, flaws and all and just fell in love with him allowing him the freedom to come to his own choices about what he wanted most.

“I love you, Billie. Give me the chance to make you happy. To show you who I really am – the man who can’t live without you. The man who deserves your heart.”

Overall the story was good, I’m glad I read it, I never felt bored, but it didn’t elicit any strong emotion from me. I didn’t laugh or cry. But I did really like it 🙂
